Hello,

I just finished a pharmacy technician home study program and have absolutely no pharmacy technician experience. Every ad I see in the paper says experience preferred or experienced only. My question to you is where does that leave the new pharm tech graduate with no experience? I mean hell, every pharmacy technician out there even those with 20+ years experience had at one time no experience whatsoever. And with Certification becoming a requirement just since either 95-96, that means that all pharmacy technicians before then had no certifications as well! I just applied for a hospital pharmacy technician job and I hope I get the job. Ive had so many damn pharmacy technician applications in the past be overlooked simply due to lack of experience. Yet I ask you: You cannot get the experience to begin with without an employer giving you a chance and giving you the job, yet nowadays, you wont get even a sideways glance if you don't already have the experience. what a quandary (sp).

and by the way--I cannot afford the 2000+ tuition it takes to go to pharmacy technician schools, and where I am at, there are little if any pharmacy technician schools out there that dont require 4+ hours of driving both ways.

any help?

Best bet is to apply at your neighborhood retail drugstore, they usually dont advertise, and take techs at all experience levels.

You can still get your national certification without going to a tech school or ever even having a tech job. I did. 😀

tried that. I have yet to hear so much as a peep from them. I applied everywhere.....CVS, Rite Aid, almost all the Independent pharmacies, and all Ive gotten so far is "we'll take your application."
Translation: we arent gonna hire you but we will give you the false impression of thinking we will, since we only hire people with experience."

atleast thats the way it is with the pharmacies up here.........🙁

Are you trying to get full time work? It can be really hard to get full time pharmacy tech work. Also this being summer means all the school kids are out getting jobs.

Are you looking for a job or just some experience in pharmacy? Because some hospitals will let you volunteer.

You might want to try this:

some mail order or special delivery pharmacies advertise on here and not in the papers.

Good luck! Ill be in your shoes in two months.

I'm having the same problem as you. I have no experience in pharmacy except for 1 yr of pharmacy school and so far no one's hired me. I applied all over the place. I'm probably going to work for a temp agency over the summer and volunteer for a hospital in my spare time. I hope for better luck next summer!

crossurfingers: If you have a year of pharmacy school why are you applying as a pharmacy tech? you should be applying as an intern! or am I reading this incorrectly?

Pharmacy tech/pharmacy intern- isn't that almost the same thing? Except interns get higher pay and can counsel. I always inquire about any pharmacy tech positions open and mention that I'm a pharmacy student.

no they're not the same from what i can tell..

it all of course depends on your state law...

you may need the hours as an intern.

and in my state they can hire more interns even after they have reached their tech max

pharmacy students are the only ones who can be interns

here techs cant take dr calls etc.

interns can do anything a pharmacist can do under the supervision of a pharmacist
