what makes people go into pharmacy? the passion of being a chemist?

will becoming a hospital pharmacist after completing residency fulfill my passion for helping and saving people's lives like DOCTORS do? what exactly does a hospital pharmacist do?

If your passion is excactly as you wrote it, " helping and saving people's lives" you can also do that even by working in a retail pharmacy. I don't know if working in retail set up makes you feel less of a pharmacist....does it?😀.

Is pharmacy my passion? No.....my husband comes as close to that position, but he can piss me off too sometimes😛.

Do I wake up everyday saying I love what I do? No - but, I don't wake up saying I hate it either. I'm a mom too & there were plenty of days I'd wake up just groaning knowing it was yet another day of "mom" stuff. But, I love my kids, was & am a good mom & they turned out pretty ok.

Do I see it as something which brings food to the table - oh...if only🙄 (& would shop, prepare & clean it up!!!).

What area is my passion? Well.......I am definitely passionate about a few areas & you really, really don't want to get me started! (Caverject is getting nauseous as we speak!). But, I'm very passionate about pharmacists being responsible & thorough clinicians....in whatever area they work. I'm not an oncology nor a pediatric pharmacist & I have great respect for these folks. But, I am an intensive care/OR pharmacist who also does ambulatory care (retail). They are as different as night and day, yet very similar.

They both require my knowledge & abilities - just different ones at different times.

There is no one "right" way to be a pharmacist. But, the very best ones enjoy drugs (no - not recreationally....but a nice glass of wine would not go amiss right now😉). You have to like learning about them, teaching folks about them (nurses, patients, family, etc...), making access easier & more understandable.....

But - don't make it your whole life. Save your passion for your family. Keep your enjoyment for your career & if the passion you have for your job at the beginning wears off...then you won't be disappointed.

Good luck!

so we can conclude that pharmacy is a profession that brings adequate food to the table; it's not a passion like medicine that takes many years out of your life.

No, I think that's an unfair conclusion, but you're welcome to it if that's what you seek.

People seek, find, and select their own passions. for me, it's pretty darn easy to be passionate about a career that is rewarding, but not all-consuming. I work to live, I don't live to work.

I can say that I love what I'm doing. Pharmacy is a second career for me, but it was always what I would rather have been doing. That said, I still grumble sometimes. There's a point in the semester when it just becomes too much and I want it to go away.

I'm not even minding my summer retail internship. In just my first week, I've had opportunities to do some supervised pt counseling. My pharmacist is really good and takes good care of her pts, techs and interns. I'm usually pretty cranky by the end of the day, but I don't feel like jumping off a 50 story building like I did nearly everyday in telecom.

No, I can't say that pharmacy is my passion. I enjoy working in a pharmacy, but I would only consider something a passion if I have this really great feeling whenever I engage in it. I only feel that way when I'm writing, but to try to live off of that would see me living in the streets within months.

The only way I can 100% truly say pharmacy is my passion is if I own my own SUCCESSFUL chain of independent pharmacies. I'm a business guy at heart and can only dream of opening up 3 or 4 "Feel Good Pharmacy" stores in my neighborhood. (Don't take my name!)

It would be so clean, high-tech with flat screen plasma tv's for football on Sundays, another one on the Food Network, and another one for drug/health information. 😀 Very comfy chairs for waiting, hell, a whole roll of them so no one has to fight for one.

Hell, I might even open up a small ice cream/soda fountain counter near the front if I feel daring enough. Brings back the old days of WAGs yet innovative enough for a high tech/business junkie like myself.

Mon-Fri 8am-8pm, Sat-Sun 9am-5pm, closed on all major holidays, full benefits for all my pharmacists, split the cost with my full time tech's. Also willing to hook up with the local universities and JC's for intern positions so they can get experience. I mean, I do need someone to re-stock. haha jk.

Oh wait, did I just type all of that?

I don't hate what I do, but I hate my current job and most of the people I work with..... 😱

so, what's your answer ? is it your passion?

eddie, i want to work for you.

right now pharmacy school is not my passion. My passion would be working out, playing sports, going to the beach, wakeboarding and going to bars. Now the reality of the world is that we have to have a job to survive. So I want to own my own pharmacy and I think that will bring me alot of satifaction, but will I wake up on the morning and want to go to work at my own pharmacy more than the things I listed above, I don't know.

My work is not my passion. My work enables me to have a life, and my life is my passion. I enjoy my work and it can be incredibly rewarding, but no, it's not my passion.

(for the record, I'm a middle school teacher, not a pharmacist)

Ha, right. I guarantee you if the pay wasn't as good and the social status wasn't as good, nobody would want to be a physician, either.

I would like to own my pharmacy, but very difficult to do so.

the money is there in pharmacy, but the work itself can get tedious rather quickly. That's what I feel when working at both hospital and retail settings.

ssdd = same **** different day similar to any job...
