Hi All,

I am doing my PharmCAS application and I do not know where to explain my D grade on microbiology class that I took last semester on my application. Is it in the Background section?

1. Were you ever the recipient of any action(e.g., a grade lowering penalty, failing grade, disqualification, suspension, probation, dismissal, etc.) by any faculty member, college, or university, PharmCAS or health licensing board for academic or professional misconduct (e.g., cheating, plagiarism, harassment, misuse of university facilities, stealing destroying or damaging university property etc.)?
2. Were you ever the recipient of any action (e.g., disqualification, suspension, probation, dismissal, etc.) by any college or university for unacceptable academic performance?

I don't think I should say Yes on the first question since I failed that class due to I couldn't handle the materials at that time due to my sons were sick for a long period of time during that semester (not due to academic or professional misconduct). Do I answer Yes for the second one? Am I disqualification (got a D) due to unacceptable academic performance? Thanks!

You would only answer yes to the first if it was due to academic dishonesty or professional misconduct.

As for the second: were you put on academic probation by your university for the D? If the answer is no, then you would answer no to that as well.

My advice, since you don't fall into either category, is to email the schools you're applying to and explain the situation that led to the D (unless there's a question in the supplemental apps that allows you to address it there) and that you plan to retake it.

Thanks for your answer! It really helps!
Yes, I were not put on academic probation by my university for that D. My major is biochem and that microbiology is just one of elective classes for my major. My academic advisor said that D is bad for my GPA but still counts for completing the requirement towards my major. So, my academic standing is still Good Standing now.

My question is, since two pharmacy schools that I plan to apply this year do not require microbiology class as their prerequisite courses, do I need to email to explain to them or should I explain it in my personal statement since I am working on it now.

Thank you so much!

You could put it into your personal statement if that fits into what you're trying to convey in your PS. See if it makes sense with the rest of what you put in your statement and if it does than I would put it in there. Good luck!

There is no need to explain the D unless you got it because you violated honor code (cheating, plaigarism etc.). Those background questions are for offenses. Getting a D is not an offense.

Poor grades are something you can voluntarily explain in your PS if you really want to or when asked in an interview.

I was put on academic probation for poor grades one term (below 2.00 for the given term) during undergrad. Should this be addressed under background? Should it also be addressed in the personal statement? Thanks

You did address this right?!
