For those pharmacists that have switched to the field of medicine and became physicians, which medical specialty did you choose and why? Any specialties which utilize your pharmacist knowledge the most or go hand-in-hand with pharmacy? I am curious. Thanks!

I have seen some here who did a pharmd and then MD to specialize psych. I know of a neurosurg resident at my hospital who was previously a pharmd. I have also heard of pharmds who go on to become anesthesiologists. I suppose anything medicine (IM etc) related would also be a good use of your pharm.d.

Im a clinical pharmacist in your shoes and have mulled this question over.

honestly our skills translate well to just about any specialty wherein you’re responsible for designing and managing treatment regimens as well as coordinating specialists such as cards etc.

We would be exceptionally good at family medicine, general internal medicine, or practicing as a critical care internist, IMO. Anything from that is a gradual drop as you become more procedure based and less medicine based

Had a question. I am a new grad of pharmacy looking to apply to medical school in the future. Did you guys have work experience in pharmacy prior to applying to medical school? Do medical schools matter what type of pharmacy experience you have? (I.e. hospital or retail)

Work experience - yes i have, but it does not matter since there are plenty who go straight from pharm school to med school.
retail vs hospital - it does not matter but I imagine if you are a retail rph, you would likely need to get some shadowing experience.

I am currently a pharmacy student, who completed my P1 year successfully. I finished undergraduate, worked a couple years and took the mcat and pcat. However, my mcat didn't allow me to get into a US school so i ended up starting pharmacy school. I really want to go to medical school. I'm not sure if i should wait and complete these 3 years of pharmacy while taking the mcat etc. or if I should go to SGU ( where i currently have an acceptance for) in the Caribbean which is the shorter route?

Any advice is much appreciated!
