Hello! I'm an incoming M1 part of an MD/PhD program interested in matching into dermatology/pediatric dermatology. I know derm is a super hard specialty to match into, and I was wondering if there were certain topics I should do my PhD in (get publications in) to better my chances of matching into a top derm residency program.

Honestly, it's entirely dependent on the research being done at your institution--the mentor you work with is just as important as the project, if not more important.

Get a derm mentor early, find out what kind of research is being done at the university in collaboration with basic scientists, and find a way into that space.

How about meeting with an MD or MD/PhD at your institution that does derm research and ask about doing your PhD with them?
