So for those of you who are familiar with scene in Philly, Einstein has been friendly towards DOs in various specialties. Jefferson on the other hand has not. Does anyone know what the impact on future DO residents may be given the recent acquisition by Jefferson? Will things change or stay the same?

Talking out my ass here but I think PCOM has a bunch of different rotation spots. So if there’s any damage it will be minimal.

1) Jefferson is friendly towards DOs — the problem is most aren’t as competitive enough as MD’s on paper
2) Depends what specialty. But in general yes, it will be much harder to match competitive fields that were previously aoa residencies there.

Me thinks not. Heck they won't even match DOs into FM. Come on now! There must be one PCOM graduate competitive with all the MDs out there.

As I said, some of the Jefferson owned hospitals are very DO friendly. The Abington FM program for example (5/7 of the interns are from PCOM i think)

No, I definitely don’t think it will significantly change those programs that are historically friendly to DOs. I actually know someone very well who is pretty high up at a residency program at Einstein and in talking to them not much is changing in regards to their residency selection process.

Jeff FM wants USMLE. Most DO’s (especially wanting FM in Philly) won’t have it or a very strong score. Also not really necessary because we have so many DO friendly residencies in the area. I’m just saying I don’t think there isn’t a bias— but still means you need to be as competitive as any MD applying to that program as well.

Jefferson also finalized its acquisition of rowan's main teaching hospital this past year but nothing major has changed other than the name. There are no benefits or losses because of this from a students perspective. All the program directors here are still the same. I think if there are any changes in competition for residency slots it'll be from the acgme/aoa merger. Its kinda funny cus everywhere you look in these hospitals now theres a "home to sidney kimmel medical college" in the corners of these jefferson banners. You just get to be a part of the jefferson family as jefferson's often forgotten ugly second cousin. So welcome to the family pcom people.

My understanding is that they screen out DOs. It’s not a USMLE thing.

I wonder why that is.
My hospital is a hub for Jefferson students. My hospital has plenty of DOs in all specialties that Jefferson students rotate through...FM, IM, ED, peds ED, etc. You’d think if they were so anti DO they’d send their students elsewhere and not want them trained by DOs. The irony!

idk either. Good question to ask them. I know great PCOM students who won't even bother to apply.

Jeff IM took a DO from Touro a few years ago, as did their EM program. Idk about their FM program, maybe they just have a PD with strong opinions.

The old Aria (now Jefferson Northeast) system was all AOA, they still take DOs.

Jeff took students this year for Anesthesiology and Rad Onc, I repeat Rad Onc. Last year for Psych. You want to tell me they don’t consider DO’s for FM? I don’t buy it at all. Pcom has a very good rep here and we’ve been around for 100+ years. Many of us rotate side by side with Jeff MD students and we have faculty at our school who are attending at Jeff’s hospital (yes the main one). A student also matched into UPenn for ENT this year. Philly is about as pro-DO as it will get in America. AGAIN, you need to be as competitive as an MD student, but your title will not be a bias here (unless it’s UPenn, even though that one student got it they are the hardest glass ceiling to break through, but even then you need STELLAR research and that’s what they really want as they are a top-ranked research institution).

Nope. This is from a reliable source. Check out the match list for the past several years.

Again not buying it. Nationally there were 79 total DO students who matched FM with a USMLE score of 220+. (33 with a 230+). I wouldn't be surprised if their match list doesn't have a single DO, but still doesn't mean they're biased against DO's.
