I am currently a 3rd year medical student and I am planning on going into anesthesia. My husband is a 4th year and he is getting his match list together in a non-anesthesia specialty that requires a pre-lim year. He plans on doing his pre-lim year near me and then we will move to wherever he matches in his advanced spot. His top choice is in Philadelphia but we are having a hard time figuring out 2-4. For number 2 he likes a program in Baltimore slightly more than another program in Philly but is not entirely sold on the decision. So my question is whether I would have more anesthesia opportunities (strong programs/good training) in Philly vs Baltimore/DC (I am including the two together b/c we think that they are close enough to live in between or one of us can commute). It looks like there are 4 programs in Philly and 4 in Baltimore/DC but are all 4 in each area worth going to? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hmmm... my thoughts are these two cities seemed pretty selective about who they interview for one. I applied to all of them besides JHU and I only got interviews at U of Maryland and UMDNJ Camden (if you include that in the Philly area). Both weren't the most desirable programs.

I think it might have something to do with the high malpractice insurance in Penn but Penn overall seems skeptical of outsiders wanting to go there. I mean I got interviews at some top programs so I assumed I would get them at Drexel and Temple at least.

I think the rumor is Georgetown takes many of their own only.

Otherwise, I'm not sure but I would say do rotations at the places you want to go to guarantee interviews. I've heard Jefferson has the best schedule and is an overall great program and Penn (and JHU) of course are very well known and strong if you are competitive enough... the others not so sure.

both cities are not great for anesthesia, they only have a few programs each

hopkins, university of maryland? 😕

big cities aren't for everyone. I loved living in both philly and baltimore.

living in the middle and commuting is technically possible, but 95 is a bitch...
