I'm thinking about switching my major to philosophy this coming semester. I don't know why, but I actually enjoy that class a lot more than my stupid ass bio class (i don't ****ING CARE ABOUT PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!!!!). I will either double major in that and biochem (I hear the higher level bio classes actually contain info you need to know) or major in philosophy and minor in biochem (if possible).

Also, I've heard some random things about "philosophy research" on the board but I have no idea what people are talking about, could anybody fill me in? I'm in an analytic chemistry research lab now, and I love it and will stick with it, but I think I'll have some extra time if I don't DM because I'm going to take summer school every summer (so I'm closer to the lake and can continue crew training).

I'm a phil major, but I don't know what kind of research is available. There was a poster that said he was going to do some, but when I asked him what it was he didn't respond. I am a senior, and I am not aware of any research in phil as an undergrad, save for honors thesis type work. Anyhow, good luck to you.

Do you know where or if you will be attending med school?

Applying now, hoping to get in obviously. Don't know where, did research in biochem stuff.

I have a BA in philosophy, but unfortunately I didn't have a minor in the sciences so I had to go back and do some post-bac work.

My advice would be to go for the philosophy degree and minor in one of the sciences to ensure you have all of the medical school prerequisite courses.

Don't go through the pain of double majoring...no one will be impressed.

My schools doesn't have minors, so I just did all the pre-reqs. Not that hard, besides, the OP was biochem major, so I am sure they've done them already.

well, since i'll be in summer school every summer it should be simple to have a biochem minor and a philosophy (pre-med) major and be able to do plunty of extra-c's 😀

Pretend this year that you are a biochem major and a philosophy minor, and take mostly philosophy classes. If, at the end of the year after taking some of the gnarly stuff like Kant and epistomology if you still dig it, then switch to philosophy. If you don't, you'll end up with a biochem degree with a philosophy minor. Make sure you really like philosophy enough before you switch.

Don't stress about research, you'll do some sort of thesis in philo and could always keep up with the biochem lab work. Although, who knows, you might end up liking philosophy so much you'll go to grad school instead of med school.

Yeah, that's the thing, I still don't know what I want to do TRULY. I just know what I am VERY interested in. I will still basically be majoring in a science during this year anyway because I'll stick with pre-med, and when you're pre-med your freshman year is packed with science classes anyway.

I would definitely go for it. I minored in English because it was too late to double major and buy do I regret it. I LOVED my English classes and I LOVED my upper div bio classes. I would just go for both for now and it you just can't, minor in one or the other. Philosophy also looks good for applications because it makes you a little different from other applicants with just bio. Good luck.

RELAX. You are only a freshman. You still have plenty of time to change majors a few times before you accumulate any substantial amount of credits.

Who knows...you may find something that you like so much that you may not even end up applying to med school.

I think philosophy might be that. I've read a lot of philosophy on my own in high school, but never acutally had a class. Now I do, and I have an AWESOME teacher (grad student, he's so lively and enthusiastic) that makes me want to become a philosophy teacher. But, hell... I'm ficle... I admit it.

No problem with that. You have plenty of time.

Just try to make a decision before your senior year. 😀

A little boost of confidence for you.

My roomate was a philosophy major from Haverford. He did in-house organic research and studied at oxford for a year. Took no time off between college and med school.

Good Luck,

Rocco

Sounds more like you flunked another science test...
