I matched in Maricopa Medical Center, Phoenix , Arizona. Anybody who matched there? Or any advise where to live so I wouldn't need to drive very far.
thank you

I am not affiliated with Maricopa but I am familiar with the area. You DO NOT want to live in the vicinity of county. Near places which are good include the Camelback corridor (several apartments for rent) and there are some fairly new apartments near McDowell Rd. and the 202 freeway. Tempe is not far, but you would be dealing with more traffic. Those two areas I mentioned are 5-10min away. Housing has become more affordable in AZ again and home builders are looking for buyers like crazy. If you are willing to drive a little, you may be able to buy a home or condo in a decent community. You should definitely visit. Feel free to PM with more specifics and maybe I can direct you better.

Look around old town scottsdale (on google maps look at indian school rd and scottsdale rd intersection) this area is very safe and is only 15-20 minutes from the hospital. In phoenix try to remember that you should live as far northeast as you are willing to drive.
If you want to buy a house maybe try laveen or surrounds in southwest phoenix, new houses in what was formerly farmland. Be careful some bad neighborhoods down there...

BTW I agree with everything that the previous poster mentioned... MMC is in a very poor neighborhood. Plan on having to live at least 10-15 minutes drive from the hospital.

I was a medical student in phx, and rotated at MMC alot. If it were me scottsdale can be a longer driver especially at peak traffic times the 101 is always busy, and the 202/60 that goes out to chandler and mesa is even worse. I would avoid those places. As far as buying, i dont know much specifics. North east phx prolly your best bet. I lived right by the biltmore area which is very nice. there are mult condo/apt there its a 10 min drive on side streets durring rush hour and it gets you away from the "ghettoness" of MMC. The area around the hospital is not very great. Biltmore: Rent @1200-1400 for a two bedroom townhouse. for a single @700-800 for "luxury" condo. Tempe is more college town atmosphere a lot of stuff to do but you got to drive on the damn 101/ sidestreets = lots of traffic.

Agree with PP - NE Phx is pretty much easiest access via the Hwy 51 to MMC and other hospitals - Hwy 51 also has the added benefit of being a "highway to nowhere" and thus sparse large truck traffic. I'd avoid living somewhere that necessitated Hwy 60 (Mesa, AJ), the I-10 (such as Tempe or QC to the east, Buckeye, Avondale to the West), the I-17 (NW Phx) or the 101. I'm pretty much a "51-elitist" in that I feel it's the easiest freeway to navigate - not saying it doesn't have it's problems, but you've got good surface street alternatives when it does (7th Street, Tatum/44th Street).

Guys, thank you very much!!!
We are not planing to buy a house .Only to rent. But we are going to be with a kid. So we need at least 2 bedroom appartment. Of course I would like to live as closer as I could but living in the safe area is important as well. I was just wondering most of the time you need to be in the hospital around 6 , sometimes earlier, sometimes a little bit later. Do you still think I will be catching a bad traffic?
This area Biltmore , for 2 bedroom appartment ( not townhouse) what can I count on?

I live around old town scottsdale, no need to take the 101 or 202, drive across mcdowell to 32nd st, hang a lefty and you are at MMC. 15 minutes any time of day. I have a 2 bedroom apartment in a complex that has just raised the rent to $900 a month, utilities paid except AC, phone, cable.
I agree tho that the 101 sux...as well as the 202 most mornings.

Guys , do you have a link to Biltmore appartment complaxes as well as old Scotsdale area? May be if you live already teher you could tell the link to the web site of those appartment complexes
Thank you !!!!

Tempe isn't too bad of a drive, either. Look around there as well...

hello,

I ranked MMC fourth for general surgery... we'll see what happens. My fiancee currently lives in the Biltmore Square apartment complex off of 16th St and Camelback Rd. http://www.biltmoresquare.net/Default.aspx. She pays ~1000 a month for 2 bed / 2 batch condo. Easy access to the 51S to MMC, it took me about 5 min to get there by car at about 5:15am when I was driving down to the interview. I'm sure at worst the commute cant be more than 15 minutes.

That Biltmore Square complex is very popular for residents and med students. It's pretty nice, affordable, and close to most of the phoenix hospitals (MMC, PCH, GS, St.Joes, etc).

I live in a 3 BR/2 bath condo in Arcadia (just south of Biltmore), in a very safe area just 5 mins from MMC and pay $1195/mo. This includes a pool, a gated community, and some utilities.
