so, I've heard the rumors from previous applicants about programs making phone calls to applicants, saying how much they like you, etc. yesterday, at an interview, a dept chairman told me that 2 of his students received "under the table (??)" offers from programs. can anyone confirm that this actually happens? so what does it mean that I've gotten no phone calls at all?

lets be clear on this: it means NOTHING if you havne't been called. First, under the table stuff is illegal and believe it or not, many people follow the ethic and wont do it (and you might certainly be inclined to take something if offered, but keep in mind that a person who violates the ethics of the system, well its something to keep in mind.

Some people can sign out of the match but the program must withdraw that space from the match. Outright. Generally IMGs get that option but not exclusively (and the details are beyond me).

As for being told youre being ranked "number one" etc, its worth the paper its written on. I know more than one person told that who subsequently didnt match. Its fine to communicate and have communicated to you that a program is interested but promised rankings mean zilch and and its ILLEAGAL to ask you where you'll be ranking them. If asked, you can express your great interest and obviously dont shoot yourself in the foot. but keep in mind, this is not what is supposed to be going on.

since we are talking about illegal stuff...

man, there is SO MUCH of that going on! I've been asked by several places about my marriage status (previously posted discussion), where I've liked interviewing (or even straight out what my top programs are). Totally not cool.

I now see a point for the MATCH lawsuit (though I'm not sure if I agree with it). This "job search" process is totally uneven -- tilted heavily toward residency programs (esp in competitive residencies like Rad Onc). Now, the ACGME requires all programs to give interviewees a hand-out with benefits... but compliance is nowhere near 100% in my experience thus far. I mean, I would certainly like to know what my salary (and insurance status) will be for the next 4-5 years. Such faux pas questions to ask though... (and i have no idea how updated/trustworthy the info on FREIDA is on that).

don't mean to vent.... but I don't like seeing illegal stuff pulled, by several programs! and we as applicants are in no position to do much about it.

There has unquestionably been a bit of questionable activity this year on the Rad Onc interview front. There were two different PDs who asked if I would be willing to take a spot directly outside the Match. And believe me, I am NOT one of those superstar candidates you fear when you meet them at interviews.

From discussions with faculty, the impression seems to be that Match violations get worse each year. More than one PD expressed quite openly to me how much they hate the Match. As I also have a visceral reaction to the Match process, this is fantastic news. Maybe change is in the air. . . .
