Has anyone else had this experience?

I had scheduled an interview at a program and later cancelled it. I told them the reason was that it was too expensive to attend. A few days later the program coord emailed me offering a phone interview with the PD/Assist PD and a resident.....a 3 hour phone conversation!!!!! Anyway, I declined because it would be tough ranking a program I had never seen etc.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience/offer and if so, did you do it. For that matter would anyone else have done the interview AND feel comfortable ranking them.

Thanks

M

Wow. They must be really desperate for applicants if they want to recruit a person who doesn't even feel like spending the time or money to check a place out. 3 hr telephone call too? That's crazy.

either that or medic13z walks on water

It's tough to walk on water with these concrete shoes!!!!

Seriously, has anyone heard of this?

oh yeah, programs and PDs are calling me on the phone daily, whether ive interviewed there or not. guess word got out...

but seriously, never heard of it and although I might talk to em, thats a desperate measure if ever i heard of one. i mean, the reason its a 'match' is to get in where you fit in. and thats hard to know on the phone. all chicks are hot on the phone. then they turn out to be Quinn.

I may not be hot on the phone but my font sure is sexy.

Obviously this program is very interested in you. I wouldn't even consider ranking it, though, unless you go out to visit.

This is the next 3-4 years of your life and will affect the way you practice medicine for the rest of your life. Make sure it's what you want. See how you like the ED, get the feel for how residents interact with patients/staff/etc. It's easy for a place to seem good on the phone, but you'll be spending thousands of hours in that ED and you want to make sure it's a good match.

Don't even rank a program that you're not going to visit, or rank it dead last if you think it's better than scrambling. Residency is too important to leave to chance.

O.k., since no one else asked the obvious question I will...

Which program did this?

I was wondering the same . . .

Spoke with GW today I may have to cancel b/c of the poor weather. They said on a few occasions in the past they have had to do phone interviews.
