Hi there, I am planning to apply to pharmacy schools next fall. I am currently on the east coast and there are some schools in the west that really interest me, but with my job and finances flying out to multiple interviews would be kind of difficult for me. I realize this is probably the case for anyone applying to a long distance school, but my friend mentioned that some schools might conduct interviews over the phone, or pre-interviews before they invite you all the way there. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of something like this happening in regards to pharmacy schools in particular.

Thank you!

In my opinion, I don't think a school would offer an OOS student an interview if the student wasn't considered quite competitive, in the first place, compared to the rest. It would be a really messed up move on the school if the student did well on the interview and still got rejected. All those travel expenses and the time taken out of the student's schedule were basically flushed down the drain and nothing came out of it.

Not trying to say that an OOS student given an interview gets some sort of "get out of jail free" card for the interview, but I'd say if the student smashes the interview, they're just about locked in for a seat at the OOS school.

Then again, what I just typed up was merely the product of logical thinking and not based on any sort of facts/evidence. Schools could very well see if an OOS student shows who they are and will just reject them on the spot. I'd very much like to hear what other people have to say about this kind of situation.

I know I didn't really answer your question, but I'm just saying that I think you're in pretty good standing and that it would probably be in the best interest for both you and the school to attend the interview in person.

I think your line of thinking is very reasonable. To clarify, I don't actually have an interview, I'm just trying to narrow down the schools I want to apply to next year. I can only afford to fly to interviews at one or two schools that are particularly far so I probably won't apply to too many. 🙂

If there is a recent graduate in your area, the school might have him/her interview you. I've had this happen to me when I was applying undergraduate.

I think schools may shy away from phone interviews since you could be doing a whole lot of things since they can't see you. Plus they wouldn't be able to see you in a "professional" setting aka wearing a suit and talking face to face with peers/authority. You can always ask the school though.

I have to agree you'll want to fly in for schools you're really serious about. It shows commitment plus face to face communication is always going to be better than digital/voice etc.

There are currently no pharmacy schools that conduct phone interviews.

Why?

You cannot hear professionalism 😉

My friend did a phone interview with Sullivan for their inaugural class. Not sure if they still give that option.
