Obviously phone interviews are not the preferable form of interview but if thats all I can wrangle, do I still have a shot at that program. All 8 of the PsyD interviews I was offered wanted me to interview on either Feb 27, March 2, or March 7. I've managed to work it so that I can interview at 5 and I really never planned to do any more interviews that that. But I just got an offer to do a phone interview on a day I'm interviewing at another school.

Has anyone gotten in off of a phone interview? Is it worth it to phone interview during lunch and divide my preparation between two programs or are my chances significantly lowered enough at the phone interview school that I should concentrate my effort on my more highly desired choice? It's not like I'm putting all my eggs in one basket.

Also how many interviews are people doing for PsyD programs and how are their current bosses reacting to the ducking out on Thursday returning Tuesday schedule?

Just a thought, but...if noone got in via phone interview, a school wouldn't offer them, would they? j/k! but seriously... phone interviewing likely tells the school they're not your top choice; however, obviously you could get in still. The school may still really really like you and therefore decide you're worth the risk.

I am trying to do something similar with one of the schools I want to interview with do to other commitments and interviews. I've had to turn a couple down to do the exorbitant cost of flights and hotels.

I have an phone interview coming up on Sunday that was scheduled due to other interview conflicts. My Boss dealt with me ducking out of work ok, but I am leaving Sat and returning Wed, so I am missing three days of work instead of four.

Can anyone give me some clues as to what questions were asked on your phone interview? I believe it will be difficult (on both sides) as you are unable to see facial expressions, body language, etc and my answers will have to be really thought out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

My personal thought on the matter is that phone interviews really stink for exactly the reasons you mentioned about being unable to see facial expressions & body language. It's also difficult to "see" when someone finishes their thoughts & I feel they miss out on a sense of one's personality. I've had two phone interviews already & have one more - I think the in person ones I have had are much better overall. All you can do is your best - let your personality, knowledge, etc. shine.

Well I decided to do the phone interview.

It was my only phone interview and I thought it went really well. It was for a PsyD program.

I got a call from the director of this program today and I got in so it is possible. I would say to future readers of this post its definitely worth it to phone interview for PsyD programs, if they will let you, but make sure you visit at least 3 campuses to get a sense of what aspects of the programs are most desirable to you and get exposure to some grad student culture. I found that meeting the grad students at different schools had a way bigger impact on where I want to go than any APA match rates or funding offers. They are after all going to largely dictate how much you enjoy your time at that school. With that said, despite what I want I will probably end up choosing based on which will provide me with the best training for my eventual career path. In that sense I could have chosen based on how they look on paper and the questions I asked during my interview.

Long story short. I got in to a PsyD with an 83% APA pre-clearinghouse match rate off a phone interview.
