Hey all,
I've been offered an interview at a UCC that offers me the choice of phone or skype interview. I am more comfortable with phone, but should I push myself to do skype? Is skype advantageous to me as the interviewee? If I do phone, will that disadvantage me?

Thanks!
Matt

Skype is awkward--tho probably gets more relaxed with practice. The advantage is getting the non-verbals and a look at each other. One of our staff has even given a Skype tour of the office--so their clearly can be added features you don't get with the phone. I don't think sites would intentionally be biased against the phone choice, but you do seem more "real" when they have a chance to see your face I expect. The tip I have heard given is to look at the camera, not at the image of the other on the screen...which means you are looking down all the time.

While the phone may give you an advantage of lying out any resources you need to reference, I believe that choosing a Skype interview shows you are more confident, interested in "meeting" the faculty, and (just a hunch) but more serious about the position (giving the faculty a more "complete" profile of who you are).

For Skype, I always put some post-it notes on the computer screen with things that I do not want to forget, reference, etc.

Good luck!
