I don't like including my photograph with my application. I think this practice leads to bias in judgement.

What school required to include photos in the application?

I had PITT, but I think they are just trying to match your face that you are the right person when you come to the interview. No big deal.

You could always refuse to include it...but you probably won't get accepted.

I had to do it for like 10 of the 14 schools I applied to. Some ask for it at the interview. You could always photoshop it and say that you've changed a bit since taking the picture.

All the Texas schools require it through their application service TMDSAS.

Not sure what the big deal is.....you're already being judged based on where you went to school, your ethnicity, the classes you took, your DAT score, your grades, where you're from, etc. People are going to be bias against you all your life for one reason or another, you should be used to it.

Ask a friend to honestly assess your looks from 1 to 10.

If it's anything under 3, you might have trouble attracting clients later on.
No parent will bring their kids to a scary looking dentist. There is so much anxiety associated with going to the dentist, no need to add fuel to the fire.

Wow, I wasn't expecting these responses...I thought some would agree with me.

Yes, life is largely about getting judged on appearances, but an application should not be based on that.

Working out...hmm I don't think that would improve my looks in a 2X2 photo of my face.

And yes I am fugly so you win there.

hmmm...like I said I thought more people would find it odd to include a photo with the applicatoion, but I guess not.

anyway, I still hold to my beliefs.

Dude, the only reason why they asked for the photo is for adcom to know one applicant from another. They interview hundreds of applicants a year, and whenever they want to discuss about a particular applicant, adcoms can recall easier from a photo than a name.

And if you're ugly, they will find that out during the interview anyways. You can't hide in your cave and expect to get into dental school.

They use this to differentiate candidates and remember them when they sit at their conference tables AFTER the interview.

Include the 2x2, don't be a jackass. Put on a suit and tie...comb your hair...and take a nice professional looking shot. If you want to photoshop out your acne, hideous scars, and third nipple that's fine.

Not submitting a 2x2 because you have low self-confidence and are scared you'll get rejected for your looks is not "holding true to your beliefs"

Wow a jackass eh? ...hmm...

Would an admissions committee reject an applicant for being ugly? You are saying quite a lot there.

NO.
I know a lot of people who don't look good got into dental schools. If you are afraid of sending your pictures because of low self-confidence, how are you suppose to do anything in life?

How are you going to see your patients? A part of being a doctor or a dentist is having confidence. If you dont have confidence, your patients can smell it and they will leave you...
Without confidence in life, you are not gonna be successful anyway.

Had an arrogant post.. most patients I know don't care about confidence and only care about the quality of work.

You're right. Looks are important for life

Fixed.

Appearance matters. We live in a superficial world and I'm sorry that you drew a short straw but no one living in our country has to be ugly if they at least try to look attractive.

I know you don't like my English and all but when you say something like this, provide some data to back it up.
Confidence is a non-verbal behavior but its very important. Any SUCCESSFUL CEOs, leaders etc need confidence to go to where they want. I dont see why my post is arrogant.

so does this mean if you are attractive you have a better chance of being accepted?

being attractive helps you at everything in life 👍

No one ever says "wow this person is TOO good looking for our school...."

Double bonded, just trying to look attractive can sometimes work and sometimes it dosen't

Go get a haircut, some nice hair gel, then shave, then practice smiling in front of the mirror for a couple minutes, ask friend to take your photo, and snap it.

And really, you're probably not ugly at all. Most blemishes you place heavy emphasis on are the ones nobody even notices.

jcruiser, that is some good advise and I will definitely follow through with it.

Anything is possible buddy. You can look better if you try and I'm sure there's a hottie somewhere in there PostBak.

Good luck!

If anyone is worried about the application picture, hire a photographer. Not only will they get the best image they can SOOC, they will edit it for you and adjust the image. Another $100-200? Yes. But it's a drop in the bucket if this is a legit worry.

Absolutely! This is a rule at life... attractive people have more doors open to them. Luckily women can always have breast implants to help their situation.... as for us men... not so much.

Seriously though, your whole application is being judged and leads to biased decisions... what more could a pic do?

And Albinopolarbear... your post seriously made my day. I laughed so hard it hurt!! Thanks!! 😀

I definitely would think it would unconsciously affect an ADCOM's judgement. Just think about the assumptions that pop into your head when you look first look at someone (You can't really help it, it just happens). That being said, I doubt it will cause you to be rejected. First impressions can easily be changed after talking to a person. At least for me.
