PHY1053 vs PHY2048

Hi guys, I am trying to decide which physics course to take as prerequisite. PHY1053(General physics I) and PHY 2048 Physics I with calculus. I am not sure if dental schools have any preference.

Doesn't matter. I took the level 100 physics that was algebra based. No issues on my end with applying to schools.

Don't take calculus-based unless you WANT to.

You have to take the one with a lab, which is the 2000 series. Unless your 1000 series has a lab.

I'd take the one with calculus because mechanics and calculus tie in together so well and it's much more interesting and enlightening. I got a much better understanding of, for instance, the relationship between distance, velocity, and acceleration by learning it with calculus. But I'm weird like that.

Overall I've heard awful things about physics w calculus. Maybe you could ask around and hear if it's one of those classes that wrecks your GPA. At some schools it's actually not bad but at mine it was awful (most people failed)... my advice would be if the 1000 series has a lab TAKE THAT ONE. 🙂

Same response as most: pretty sure calc-based isn't required. I called my #1 choice (GRU) and they said calc based isn't necessary.

Although I did have both my physics professors ask, "are you sure you're in the right class?"....when I introduced myself/my goal etc. lol

The calc based course was the engineering kids weed out course at my university. I would take the algebra/trig based one. Why add extra stress especially since it won't put you at an advantage.

Is the course number critical? Do dental schools prefer courses with higher course number?

It makes more sense with calculus, but of you're just trying to get a grade, go for the trig based (why do people say it's algebra based?).
