Hi, question about jugular veins that im confused about.

What is the difference between jugular venous pulse, and JV distention in terms of what happens and what you see? In class we learned something about physical w/ external jugular, and also internal jugular, but I get confused about which is which... can someone help me out and clarify this. Thanks!!

Jugular venous distention (JVD) is a manifestation of increased jugular venous pressure (and is visualized at the external jugulars)... it is usually evident in right heart failure and signals basically that the blood is "backing up" because the heart isn't pumping it effectively.

Jugular venous pulse/pressure (JVP) can be used to evaluate the right side of the heart and can be helpful to evaluate some heart and lung conditions. Fluctuations of this pressure during the different stages of the cardiac cycle can be monitored (usually at the internal jugular) and are visualized as a, c, and v waves and x and y descents. Different conditions cause changes in these waves....

Thats a basic overview but I'm not sure what specifically you wanted to know about.
