For those with a parent that is a physician: Just wondering how their specialty impacted the specialty you chose or are choosing. Also what kind of advice did they give you about choosing specialties?

My dad's a cardiologist. Told me to do anything but primary care. Of course, I chose FP. 😉

yeah my dad a neurologist and I started specialising in brain surgery some time back.

My dad is a rheumatologist. He didn't really push me at all, even after I decided on ob/gyn. He did convince one of my best friends that rheum was the way to go, however.

Mom is a pathologist. I'd shoot myself if i had to look at slides all day. I'm doing Emergency.

Dad is psych here (was peds in England), Mom is PM&R here (was starting on ob-gyn in India). I'll be PM&R with likely a more procedural fellowship, then a research fellowship. I always liked what my mom did. The therapists are nice, EMG is fun, patients tend to be motivated and nice. My mom said that any specialty will get boring after 8 years or so and also said that research is key to advancement if you are at all affiliated with a university. She thought neuro was interesting and that is likely what my little sister (an M3) will do. But I like procedures, research, and nice people, so it's PM&R for me.

Neither of my parents are physicians. My grandfather was a pediatrician. He loved it, but was very much a product of the 'golden age' of medicine, and felt the profession changed so much towards the end of his career that he has tried to steer me away from primary care.

I'm still leaning towards peds.

That's exactly the issue with my dad. He's older (83 this year) and also enjoyed the "golden age" of medicine. He retired just as insurance/HMO issues started to chip away at the physician's autonomy and salary and wanted anything but primary care for me. Can't deny where your heart leads you, though, and I never got into it for the money. Got no family to feed except two dogs and a cat (he had six kids!) so I'm free to enjoy the wonderfully broad and interesting ranges of ages, illnesses and personalities that FP brings my way. Couldn't be happier at the moment, and now my father sees that and is very happy that I chose the path that I did. Glad I listened to my heart.
