Hello all,

My situation is quite atypical - I completed two PGY-1 years, at two different programs (one of them was as a rotating intern). I won’t get into why I left at this time, but I left in good standing. This was in 2017. I obtained my license. I’ve been working in non-clinical roles since then, not completely unrelated to the field of medicine (think chart reviews, etc). I desire to get back into medicine. I haven’t yet applied for this cycle, either.

Obviously my chances at a traditional residency program are very slim - so I came across the program in the title (www.prrprogram.com) and apparently since I am licensed I qualify for their program and to be board certified in general practice as well. This all seems too good to be true, and I am still finding hard to believe how I could qualify or succeed on this path considering I wouldn’t have the traditional training (rotations, etc) under my belt. I believe this is more of a self study program. My understanding is that this program is for physicians who were previously board certified and took a break from medicine many years into their career and make a decision to return.

Does anyone have any insight into this program?

I would contact them either using the form online or by the phone number they provide to ask about your specific situation. It does say licensed and not necessarily boarded. However, you don't seem to fall into the category of any of the examples they give (retired, specialists, surgeons, etc).

I have contacted them and they continue to state that I am eligible for their program but they didn’t get into specifics about my particular situation

Update- I did call and they had mentioned for me to contact local clinics (federal) to see if my particular set of circumstances would be acceptable.

That makes sense. The main issues you may have is with insurance/CMS actually being willing to reimburse your work and you being able to be properly covered with malpractice insurance based on your situation.

Just take it all with a grain of salt. Just remember, this is a program that is independent of licensing agencies. I'm sure they have done their work to make sure they aren't just offering online classes for the heck of it, but in the end after you take the courses, I don't believe they have any responsibility in the way of getting you licensed. I could be wrong, but that's how I perceive it.

If you have a license, why can't you work in clinical settings?

I used to work with physicians at a county health department and jail in FL who did not finish residency and weren't board eligible/certified.

It’s not that I can’t, it’s just that the opportunities for “license only” physicians are few and far between. I can think of only 1 or 2 positions that I had been offered, and both were not really amenable due to the commute, etc. I was hoping this program could bridge the gap between only having a license and being board certified. It’s also been a while since I have been clinically active.
