Physician-scientist targeted recruitment

I had a pathology program recently offer me funding for a research tech and supplies for the duration of my residency (to work in the lab I affiliate with). They claim that flexible time can be built into the clinical schedule to facilitate this research. This is in contrast to some programs I have visited which provide salary support (and occasionally supply money) for postdoc training after a few focused clinical years. Both would culminate in K08 submission, the former perhaps a few years faster, and some kind of start-up package in a pathology department.
Any opinions on which is the better approach? Anyone else (pathology or otherwise) experience this kind of physician-scientist targeted recruitment?

There are certainly more qualified people on this board than I to comment, but no one's answered yet, so my two cents.
Never underestimate the value of a good tech. One perspective on your situation:
You could spend the full length of the residency doing research, spending your protected time thinking through things and having the tech do the actual work for you, or you could spend a smaller length of time and do all the work yourself. Given a decent tech, the first route should be considerably more productive. The early-career MudPhuds I know all rely heavily on techs, since they have to spend more of their time in clinic than would a PhD in the same post.

Having an experienced tech would be a fantastic way to keep your research productivity high during your residency. I have worked with many techs that can function autonomously, and two heads are often better than one.

What a great deal...
