Physician Shadowing Benefits?

I am a sophomore in high school and I have recently called a Surgical associate were they have said yes to me shadowing the surgeon. What are some benefits of shadowing, what am I supposed to do while shadowing, and what would be a appropriate attire for shadowing? Thanks

well you just watch, you show up with shirt/tie/khakis.

Its a hoop, but an important one. It shows you have a clue what medicine is about and that you've given it a real look.



You're not completely too young to shadow, but i'd wait until senior year of high school, anytime during college to shadow.

Ask questions when its appropriate and show interest, but DO NOT annoy the physician.

Make sure you shadow a family doc too! You're going to def want to show that you give all walks of medicine consideration and are open to experience different things.


My shadowing consisted of general surgery (heavily), family medicine, anesth, emergency, urology, rad onc, and radiology.

In the end shoot for 100+ hours.

Ask a question if there is free time. Don't ask too many. Say thank you profusely. Try to stay out of the way.

If you go into the OR ALWAYS ask if where you're standing is ok. Don't move unless someone says you can.

you get 100 rather quickly.

I really just spent probably a total of 3 weeks, split up over 3 summers. Not bad at all.

I volunteered as well. 3 hours/week for 1.5 years. It was all gravy.
