How should I go about contacting physicians asking them if I could shadow them?

If I were to use email, what would I want to include in the email for them to take me seriously and get a valid response?

I wouldn't use e-mail. I'd recommend either calling the office or visiting the office. E-mails are too easy to ignore.

Just say that you're a college pre-med student at X, interested in getting some clinical experience, and wanted to see if you could shadow the physicians. You'll more than likely have a lot of people say no, but eventually you'll get a yes.

You could start with your GPs office and go from there. Since you already know your particular GP, s/he may be able to put you in touch with others who would be good to shadow. 👍
