Has anyone had luck finding evening/weekend physics classes in (or very near) NYC? With it being such a time-intensive course, I can't seem to find anything that starts at 5 or later. This summer would be great... or next fall/spring could work too. I know there are a few schools that still need to post their upcoming summer/fall courses, but it seems like it's a class only offered in the morning/afternoon :/

Right now it's the one big pre-req standing in my way to applying, but I'm beginning to worry I won't be able to take it without quitting my job... which financially I just can't afford to do. 🙁

Any suggestions? Thanks!

you try a local community college?

at mine they offer a few sections that are past 5 pm actually

it has one class on tuesday night and the lab on saturdays

very convenient

good luck!

Check out the CUNY schools. Hunter has solid sciences as does City College and Brooklyn College. That said, it may be tough to land those classes due to registration priority given to matriculating students (i.e. post-bac programs and degree students). I don't know much about Queens College or Staten Island but give them a look as well.

If you are a NYer these schools are very VERY affordable. We're talking like 2500 a semester for 12-20 credits. That's cheap.

Oh and these are not community colleges. They are most definitely university level classes where you will have to work hard for your A. (Not knocking community colleges, but the grades earned at CUNY 4 year schools will be respected by adcoms).

ps Kelly Kapowski was hot!

I haven't yet, I'm going to try everything possible to take it at a 4 year school first. If I can't find anything that will work though, I'll look into community.

Yeah, the CUNY system has a lot of options. I work near Hunter so it'd be great if I can take it there. So far though, I can't find anything offered in the evening. Hopefully, once all the fall schedules are listed online, one of them will have an open evening class. Thanks 🙂

I took classes at Hunter. Physics (lecture) is one of those classes they DO let you overbook if it is full, so I recommend showing up to the Physics office and speaking with the secretary there. That said, the classes are very doable as long as you take them seriously. I knew lots of students from "better" colleges that took classes there that bombed because they didn't respect the courses. Good luck. Also, I recommend signing up as a second degree student so you will have higher priority in signing up for classes.

Not sure how far you would be willing to travel but SUNY Purchase has physics during the fall/spring semesters at 6:30-8. I know some people who commute from the city so it's possible but inconveniant. New teacher so I can't comment on the quality.

GL in your search!

I'm at Hunter and I'm doing my Chem II and lab this summer. Let me tell you- summer classes are INTENSE. Even in the humanities. I plan on saying goodbye to my life for that time.

Also, I've read that many schools look down on summer classes and reqs taken at cc. Unfortunately, I have no option. It may behoove you to just wait till the Fall. Definitely apply soon, just to be safe. If you're a post-bacc, you get priority registration!

Good luck!
