Hello all, I am just going to pass on the information I received before I started college from a friend's dad, which is that you can pick any major prior to going into any professional school.I graduated with a BA in Psychology (changed my major from Bio the first day of school as a freshman), and I will be attending USC Pharmacy school.

Don't fall into the mentality that only Biology or other related majors are mandatory or more favored to get into schools. For me, I really enjoyed my psychology courses, and I had more time to do well in my pre-reqs (while participating in a variety of ECs and working) rather than competing furiously in upper div Bio classes.

Although pursuing a Bio major may let you experience more science classes, I believe that excelling in your pre-reqs and doing well on standardized testing should be your main goals. I saw way too many of my friends who are Bio majors not make the cut.

I'm not trying to scare you guys away from Bio, but you should be aware of other options out there. Pick the major that you would enjoy the most (not what your parents or counselor tells you to do)!!

Decent advice but I've heard it quite often.

I personally love bio and can't find myself majoring in anything else.

Ditto. I happen to love Bio. Thanks for the advice, though. 🙂

thanks for the advice but biology is my love and i cant see myself with any other major. even if i did major in anything else, i would WANT to take those upper division bio classes so i think i'll stick to the bio major and chem minor. great advice though and psychology is great too!

I have also heard this often before, but it's still good advice.

I actually never planned on majoring in science, and right now I'm deciding whether to major in International Relations or Political Science, with a minor in Spanish or business.

In fact, I've heard that something other than a science-major might make you stick out more, which is a potential plus.

I've heard this as well.

in the end. its best to just major in something you like and are passionate about (science or non-science) because if u truly like what ur learning about in your major, ur more likely to do well in classes therefore raising your gpa. everyone is different and likes different things. one shouldn't major in a science just to get into med school and one should not major in humanities just to stand out more to med schools. major in what you like and the rest will fall into place.

Could being some sort of business major be beneficial down the road for starting your own practice(a practice is like a business right? 😵)?

It could, but I believe a lot of learning occurs outside of the classroom such as by gaining work experience. A business major prior to attending professional school isn't a bad idea if that is what you want to do.

Thanks for the advice. I took an accelerated bio course my freshman year of high school, and it was alright. I think I will wait till I take AP Biology to see if I really hate/like it.
