Based upon the above posts and what I have heard from others, it looks like Yale, UCSF, Nicklaus Children's, McGaw Medical/Northwestern, Hopkins, Cincinnati Children's, UPMC, UT San Antonio, Utah and Univ of Washington have yet to send out their first wave of invites? If anyone has heard from these programs, please post so we can update the list. Also, people are starting to drop some invites so there should be some movement on the interview list so expect a second wave.

Hi all, just curious how many interviews people are aiming for?

I'm struggling back and forth with that decision. I'm at 14. Have a few more programs to hear from. I've asked around but haven't got a good answer on what to shoot for

I’ve been informed by some programs during interviews that they are interviewing anywhere between 20-25 candidates per position this year since people have the opportunity to apply broadly. No financial restrictions makes it easier for the candidate. It would be in applicant’s best interest to interview at as many as possible.

Northwestern sent out a while ago, Hopkins sent out recently.

Haven't heard from Cinci or UPMC

San Antonio just sent me a message today. Not sure if it’s the initial invite or a second wave, but it had a full listing of all the dates they were interviewing and they go until 20 November, so I think it is their initial invitation.

I’ve heard from upmc and Cincinnati about 2wks ago.

Haven’t heard from Yale, Utah or Hopkins.

While interviews are still going out, there are only about a dozen of us here and we represent a small percentage of the applicant pool, so it is quite possible that others have gotten invites. I'm a little surprised that there are only a few that someone here hasn't heard back from.

As far as interviews, I'll probably end up cancelling a couple later ones and end up around 14-15 depending on if anything else comes. Still probably way more than I'll end up needing, but it is so hard to tell this year.

As far as number of interviews, I'm at 10 and waiting to hear back from 4 programs. My program director said a fair bit less than that would be reasonable, but my target was in the ballpark of 10

Probably doing 15-17. I have significant interest in many and would like to see what they have to say.

I'm also someone who did 21 residency interviews and never got tired because I wanted to see what each offered and how I felt at each place, so I definitely get the sentiment. Some of the websites have so little information it is hard to have any idea what the program's strengths are

I know someone who was a REALLY strong candidate last year who interviewed at 14 programs and didn't match. There was literally no reason this person shouldn't have matched - I think it's a numbers game since pretty much everyone is so well-qualified. I do know that there were less than 200 applicants this year (the lowest number in the last few years), so the match rate *should* technically be higher this year than in recent cycles. And at the end of the day, you only need 1 program to want you....

That data is already available? How many applicants is typical out of curiosity? I know one of the programs alone got almost 200 apps

Last year there were 227 people who registered for the match for 198 positions. Prior to that was 217, 204, 188, 186, and 206 in 2015, though the number of positions has steadily risen, with only 168 in 2015. As for this year's number, presumably ERAS has that in a database somewhere, question would be who has access willing to divulge.

Anyone else getting hung up after accepting interview invitations and then waiting for days for those programs to give interview date options and in the meantime, receiving other invitations and can't book them because of limited interview date options at this point and waiting for prior programs to provide dates.

I know the PD at one of the best children’s hospitals in the country who typically sees the highest number of applications... and it was less this year (according to this person). Take it for what it’s worth...? Haha S/he is also interviewing the same number as years past (7-8 applicants per position available), so not sure where those massive numbers are coming from. I’m also trying to be optimistic

Northwestern Rejection 9/10

Yup +1, very annoying

Yeah, I don't know what the program upside is to offer 3 dates and we'll get back to you, but from an applicant standpoint it's very frustrating

Anyone else getting waitlisted?

At either one or two places. I consider it a de facto rejection

I think this year is a funky year and it is kind of unfortunate that so many people are accepting interviews that they have no intention of ranking. The delay in reviewing apps by a month gives the programs a short period of time to conduct interviews. That, along with the fact that everyone is applying much more broadly since they now have the time and money, and accepting interviews "for practice" and taking these spots from applicants that would really benefit from it. I have no idea when these "second waves" happen, but there are a lot of programs I have yet to hear from, and I don't know if they are waiting for interview spots to open up or what. Just hope all applicants are taking that into consideration and not just "hoarding interviews" for the hell of it. My PD said the optimal number of interviews would be 10.

With regards to above since you quoted me... I hardly believe people are “hoarding interviews”. If an individual earned a PCCM interview , I believe it is up to that person to decide if they want to undergo. Some of my colleagues have interviews from top tier programs, are you supposed to cancel Boston, Seattle or Baylor? Would you not want to see what each of these world class institutions offer?

I will probably end up doing 8-10 (still deciding about some of the later interviews I have scheduled.)

in the scheme of things, not having to travel makes it easier and cheaper to interview at more places, however it is still a day I need to get covered if I am not on elective, so arranging coverage with my colleagues who are also interviewing has been the main rate limiting step for me. Also, at some point I have to ask myself, is this interview at a place that I think will realistically displace any of my top 3-5 ranks - if not, I feel somewhat compelled to open the spot for someone who might say yes to that question.

Adding to the trickle.

I imagine I will end having interviewed at more places than I need, though I have rather specific interests and issues. That said, I've canceled a couple and figuring out a couple more.

Anyone hear anything last week
Im waiting for this "second wave" but it seems like there may not be one

Radio silence. I am on several waiting lists and have not heard a thing.

I have not tried to reach out to the places I am on the waitlist. I am fortunate that I have enough interviews without them. But if I did get off the waitlist for a few of them, I would then drop interviews at other places that are not as desirable for the things that I am looking for such as geographic location.

As we finish interviews and put rank lists together, I'm having trouble teasing some programs apart. Anyone have any strong opinions about or experiences with the SoCal programs? Specifically for UCLA, CHLA and Rady, I'm interested to hear people's impressions.

Good luck to everyone today! I look forward to hearing how everyone did!
