PICU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
By far one of my favorite rotations in medical school.

Things I would review:

1) Normal/abnormal pediatric vital signs
2) Ventilator management - know the general concepts of oxygenation vs ventilation and a sense of the different modes. These modes often have different names based on the equipment your unit uses, but know the basic concepts of whether pressure or volume is the thing you're controlling, what triggers the breath, etc. Mode names can vary, but physiology does not. Also know how to assess for an air leak and that a small leak is good.
3) Google 'equations in critical care' and review some of those. CC docs love their equations and they really do help you think through management
4) Review ARDS guidelines -- even if you don't see this, you'll probably talk about it
5) find a nice review article on sedation in pediatrics as there are some distinct differences from adults
6) ECMO basics and common complications
7) Find a review article for most common reasons for PICU admission and know those conditions and their management deeply (ie. DKA)

Hopefully others will add some too. Have fun with it!

I think #7 is your best bet.... Dka. Status asthmaticus. Status seizure. Respiratory failure. Severe trauma. Know how to interpret blood gases!! Review the basic management of those. Im guessing it will be your first time in a picu so don't stress too much 🙂

check out LearnPICU. Pretty reasonable resource for PICU topics
