I am attending Pikeville in the fall of 2003. I want to hear from any other students planning on attending Pikeville in the fall. I look forward to hearing from all of you!!🙂

I'll be there if I get my house sold in Atlanta, among other things...

Count me in...I'm actually glad to see that another UK person will be there. Also, there is another thread started with a few more of us in the pre-osteo forum.

I am going and also, oddly, a friend of mine is going. I say oddly because we didn't know that the other applied until shortly before our interviews, which happened to be on the same day.

First year at PCSOM here! Congrats on your acceptances! I'll be helping out with more interviews Saturday morning at 8. blah.

So some of you are UK people huh? I went to Georgetown right down the road. Is there anyway any of you could bring Tolly-Ho's down here to Pikeville with you when you come? I could really use a Super-Ho Combo right now!!!!

DOSouthpaw-I couldn't agree with you more, nothing like a good Ho burger with chessy tots at 3 am. Dorsey's just doesn't compare to it. That's one of the things I'm going to miss most about Lexington is the food and coffee. Ahh...at least Pikeville has El Azul.
So, you went to G-town? I took orgo under Wisemen.

Yeah, I had Wiseman too. He's a good teacher.

Okay. I need your help. The house I was looking to rent didn't quite work out. Do you guys know how I can find a three to four bedroom house with two bathrooms, a yard, and pet friendly? This is what I need, but it seems almost impossible to find. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Yeah, me too. Please let me know if you find some suitable options with those parameters. I'm thinking seriously about just buying something in Pikevegas that suits my needs.

i thought about that too (buying that is). what scares me about that is that you would have to sell between second and third year if your rotation site is anywhere else. and you only have two weeks between summer classes and rotations. the thought of still paying a mortgage payment and having rent at the same time is scary to me. i will let you know if i find anything. did you ever sell your other house? Pikevegas? That's pretty funny:laugh:

jekel,
Think about this:
1.) There is more demand for housing now than there was a year ago. As the class size increases, so too does the demand for rental housing. you are proof of that.
2.) Interest rates are still low.
3.) You might or might not do years 3-4 in Pikeville.

My plan is to probably buy with the idea that I would RENT the property out to other students after I leave Pikeville, whether it is 2 years or 4 years later...if you structure the loan appropriately and can find a local resource (real estate companies typically do this for 10% of the monthly rent) to manage the property for you when you are away, you can realize cash flow, a tax write-off, and still have a nicer place to live while you are there...

See?

No, I haven't sold my house yet...the same reason that my house is selling slow is the reason that buying a house now is good...it is a buyer's market!

That's true...which I'm now considering purchasing a house because of the interest rates are low and it really wouldn't be that difficult to rent. Which I've also heard that they aren't taking the extra 15 because the AOA hasn't approved it.

Well, I think I finally found a place within walking distance from school. I'm going to rent it site unseen. I'm livin' dangerously. 😛 I found it from the housing list. Although the numbers are outdated, I called just about every one until I got some replies.
I have a sort of an unimportant question for those of you in Pikeville now. Do you know what national cell phone service gets decent reception down there? I have Sprint and while I was there for the interview, it didn't work at all. Thanks!

Verizon Wireless works pretty well in pikeville but not on the mountain parkway. I am an agent for Verizon, so if you have any questions please message me back. By the way, who did you get your house from. I just hope it wasn't the one that I was looking into. Just curious.

I'm just getting a one bedroom apartment, so I don't think we are talking about the same place. The other cell phone service I was thinking of is cingular. But, it seems like verizon always has better deals, I just wasn't aware they had coverage in pikeville. Thanks for the info.

With Verizon, it depends on your rate plan. You could not get a local Pikeville number, but you could get service there. I don't think you could get a local Cingular number either.

I'm not a cingular salesperson or anything, but I have found that I got the best reception throughout KY with Cingular vs Nextel and Sprint, as examples. Cingular's pricing plans just changed again and their nationwide plans are not as competitive as they were, say, a year ago, but I'll probably leave Nextel and go back to Cingular when/if I get up there this summer.

Your mileage may vary...

Hey guys, the class size increase was approved by the AOA. Just thought I would let you know. 🙂

Glad to see that we did get approved for the extra 15. Also, when it comes to cell phones go with Appalachian wireless (1st choice) or Cingular (2nd). You can get a local number with either, the only difference is the amount of reception you get. Applachian provides better service if you live in the county, but both have great service in Pikeville.

Sunnydayz, where did you find your place? Just curious because I was thinking about a couple and you might of helped eliminate one.

Hossofadoc,

I just "pm"ed you.

Does anyone know when we start?

Thank God, I found a place to live in Pikeville...I never thought I would be so thankful for that. Anyone else had any luck on the housing search?

So I have put off looking for housing since December and now I can no longer procrastinate. Does anybody have any tips? I went through the online paper and the list that Angel sent me. I was thinking I would go up for 1 week day and try to squeeze everything in -- can it be done? And is there a part of town that most students live in? Any help would be really appreciated!

Cookie,
Well, there really isn't a set place that a lot of med students live in Pikeville. I'm living in The Anthony which just opened and seems to be a place that a good amount of med students live. The owner actually built the apartments for med students. Some tend to live in Turntable, which is a group of townhouses and they can be a little pricey if you don't have a roommate. Also, Dr. Gutti is building some apartments that are pretty nice, you might want to contact him about those. If you need anymore help feel free to ask.

Different subject: funding! How are you guys planning to pay for PCSOM? Any idea what the official budget is yet?

Any of you going for the NHSC or other service-cancellable loans?

I'm paying for school by taking out the full 38,500 from Uncle Sam. I just worked on my budget for the next two years. It looks like I will be in debt until the day I retire

hossofadoc -- could you give me a phone number for The Anthony and Turntable? That would such a help. I'm coming down to PCSOM in about 3 weeks and would like to have apartments set up to look at when I get there.

Med. school will be funded by the United States. Thank God for Uncle Sam's loans, if not for those I'd probably by investing in a set of Equinox Hydroponics Grow Lights and some "Organic Gardening Supplies!"

I wished that the KY schloarship would cover more then just primary care.

I am so excited about starting school this fall!! It is slowly creeping up on us. Just quit my boring job a week and a half ago. Is 38,500 the budget? Has anyone heard anything about the Kentucky scholarship or about loans yet? I have finished my fafsa forms (actually about a month ago) and haven't heard back from the school yet. Also, about the TB test, can we have that done anywhere and just send the results to the school? 😀

The loan and KY scholarship stuff is being worked on right now from what I understand. You should be hearing from it soon. Yes, you can get your TB test anyplace and just send the results in. Not a problem there. 🙂 Goodluck. I know I'm happy, I just passed Neuro!!! whoo hoo!!!

I want to bump this so if anyone else just recently got in they can post.

I just took my MCAT's and was looking at schools to apply to and found Pikeville quite interesting ( not to mention it is the closest from my hometown of TN). I would appreciate it if people could tell me why they chose Pikeville, and a career in DO, thanks.

I originally chose to apply at pikeville because it is only three hours from my hometown. when i got there, i really liked the people and the town, so that helped me make up my mind. Seems like a great place to study and it is only one hour from Red River Gorge, which is an awesome place to camp and hike.

I decided to attend Pikeville because I really enjoyed the people, the town, and the great state of Kentucky. I am originally from Michigan and was also accepted at MSUCOM, but I just felt like I belonged in Pikeville. Also, they pay for your books, scrubs, lab coats, stethoscopes, basically anything you could possibly need for med school and they give you a laptop computer. According to the students, the profs are available at almost anytime to answer questions or to assist you in any way possible. I really loved the idea of having no real distractions to studying and the cost of living is much cheaper than where I live in Lexington.

besides the laptop and books, etc. they also gave the last graduating class palms (so i heard through the grapevine). they really seem to take care of their students.

Ohhh, how I love Pikevegas...let me count the ways...
I chose PCSOM for many reasons. I'm from Pikeville and it seems like the perfect fit being that I have family and friends (support group). I'm very familar with the school being my father was in the class of 2002 and the education level is top notch (not just personal opinion). The area is a great place to study, it doesn't have a lot of distraction which if you are the type easily distracted (like me). Also, the profs are great at aiding the students before exams and they always have an open door policy. The third and fourth year rotation sites are pretty good too.

The only drawbacks are that Pikeville is not a booming metro...it's a small city, a little backwards, but one that has a great environment for a med. school and a community that is very receptive. It's also hard to pass up all the free things they give you, plus if you want to do primary care the KY schloarship is great bonus. Remember if you are really into OMT/OPP they have one of the best in Dr. Stiles.

Yep, Dr. Stiles is the man!

Found housing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Jekel - where did you decide to live at? I'm narrowing down a few options - I have to make my decision this week - no more procrastination!!!!

I found a cool house close to school. It is pretty big, but we will have three people living there.

Howdy 😛

movin'-in in a month...

Buster- Where you living in Pikeville?

When is everyone else moving to the Pikevegas?

Since you?re from Pikeville I figured that you?d know better than anyone about the place. Checked out Anthony Suites, Ridge Cliff, Turntable and drove by a few places. I ended up goin with Anthony Suites considering the location (short walk to class and the private parking lot) and the brand new interior of the building.

I am moving the first of August. I am taking a current students house, so I have to wait for them to move to their rotation site.

Buster- Yeah, The Anthony is pretty sweet...I wished it was just a little bigger. If you need any help when you are moving in just come and look me up, I'm in 202.

Jekel- That sucks you have to wait till then to move in that close before school starts.

Yeah, but my parents got a wild hair up their butts and decided they want to take me on vacation before school starts. So....I'm not feeling too sad about it. I will have about a week before orientation to get settled in. We should get everyone together for a beer or something! 😀

Jekel- Oh yeah, I'm sure that we need to get everyone together for a drink (to help release some of the jitters/stress of starting medical school).

If I can find a damned house, I will *host* beers for SDN'ers going to PCSOM! You can gather that I'm highly frustrated...will be making an offer on a house in town this week, I guess...haven't found anything suitably large in rental housing.
