I dont know about Upenn,for PITT you are supposed to hear from them by phone call.Good luck!!

penn notifies by snail mail. they send out a few letters to their top choices to be received ON dec 1. from what i've heard, they're rather conservative with offering admissions, so they do it little at a time.

last year i heard from both pitt and penn on dec 2nd (sorry i know one more day sucks). pitt by phone call-she called the first half of the alphabet on dec. 1st until she lost her voice and finished calling everyone on dec. 2nd. penn i heard from mail.

im not sure what you asked about if someone interviewed before dec. 1st and heard on dec. 1st,
"got ya, did you interview before dec 1st, and hear back on this date?" but i interviewed in mid-nov last year and heard dec. 2nd.
