I'm going to be interviewing there and I have an option of staying there an extra day if I wanted to before I need to head off to my next interview site. But I'm wondering if I should even stay there b/c I don't know if there's must to see in pittsburgh. Sorry for my ignorance of the area. It just doesn't seem like it'd be as exciting as a city to sightsee as NY or Chicago. Let me know if you know anything that I should do to stay for an extra day in pitt. 🙂 Thanks!

hey!..when will you be there? I'm going on the 11th for an interview the next day... i've never been to pittsburgh either but i'd imagine there'd be a bunch of historical stuff to do/see (?)

Obviously, Pittsburgh can't compete with NY or Chicago (although I was not very impressed with Chicago). But there still is plenty to see in Pittsburgh.
It all depends on what you are interested in and what you make out of it. There are nice muesums and the Cathedral of learning nationality rooms are a definite must see. Downtown has some nice historic areas but you want to stay away from the "business" district downtown. It just is not what you would expect.

Take a look at the Pittsburgh skyline at night from Mt. Washington.

Warning: You will fall in love with whoever you're there with, male or female.

There are plenty of muesums here, all of them very good:
Carnegie art muesum
Carnegie muesum of natural history
Phipps conservatory
[insert any museum from list http://www.pitt.edu/~fasgso/museum.html]
and of course the warhol muesum.

aaaaaah, so much to say about my hometown! definitely go up to mt. washington to see the view at night. it's b-e-a-utiful. and to get up there, you should take the incline. basically it's like a trolley that goes up a straight track up a steep hill, but you can see the view the whole way up. it's fun.

best thing about pittsburgh is that you can see lots of things for not a ton of money (also goes for the housing in pitt...avg 1-br apts are about $500 for a really nice place). definitely make your way over to the strip district esp. if you'll be there on a saturday. they have tons of cheap fresh produce, all the italian goodies you could ask for, homemade biscotti (enrico biscotti is the big one), and lots of other fun stuff to see.

u. pitt has an interesting campus...it's not really much of one at all! it's right in the middle of the oakland neighborhood, which kind of looks like a small downtown. there are lots of little stores there that are one-of-a-kind, so that's worth checking out (and you can walk right down to forbes avenue to check those out). i don't recommend going to the actual "downtown" after about 6 pm...everything shuts down and it gets kind of sketchy. but during the day there are certainly things to see.

lastly, if you can make your way to PNC park to see a pirates game, you are in luck. the tickets are CHEAP (we're talking like $5 for a student deal, $10 for regular tickets), and the park is gorgeous. don't go expecting to see a great baseball game (i love the pirates, but they're not exactly a winning baseball team), but do go to observe the fabulous open park (you can see right over 2nd base to the allegheny river and downtown...it's so nice 🙂)

good luck!

Go to Walnut St. in Shadyside for a day. Great shopping, good cafes...wonderful resaurants. Just follow 5th ave down to the Shadyside Inn and turn there. Also, I used to frequent Shady Grove bar/lounge in college, loved it.

hope that helps 🙄

this might be a random question, but where are the grocery stores in pittsburgh? i interviewed there, and thought about the logistics regarding the living situation. they said you don't need a car, so i was wondering where to live...oakland? shadyside? those are the two places i would consider, but when i looked at their student survival guide, there didn't seem to be any options. sorry, i know this is rather premature, given the fact that i haven't been accepted. just wondering...

any thoughts?

too bad i'm doing pitts with red eye. I'll be there for interview then fly straight back.

when is everyone going to pitt? i'll be there on the 6th-7th!

Yeah, you don't really need a car. The buses are really good here. There's a Giant Eagle within walking distance of my apartment (I live in Squirrel Hill) and I think there's a Whole Foods near Shadyside. You can also take the bus a bit farther away to Homestead, where they have all manner of shopping, movies, restaurants, Target, Best Buy, etc. Kind of an outdoor mall area. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions about the area.

There's a whole bunch of Giant Eagles all over the place. I liked the one on Shady and Ellsworth. The other ones were a little too creepy for me.

For living, I would pick Shadyside or even Squirrel Hill. Those seemed the safest for me. Oakland is just too scary at night. I heard lots of stories of ppl getting mugged. If you live anywhere near 5th, getting to UPitt is easy. There's tons of buses that go right down 5th and stops in front of Pitt and the hospital, UPMC.

I worked in Pittsburgh this past summer and loved it- I'll be there to interview on 6th-7th October. Goto the waterfront if you have a day- movie theatre, dave and busters, shopping; lots to do.

come on.... are you trying to tell me you don't like the dirty bird? One has to fall in love with a grocery store that has an armed security guard!

Holy Guacamole! 😱 They were armed? I didn't know that!

I loved going out to Robinson: Costco, Walmart, Target, every store is there!

Waterfront is also a really fun place. But don't wander too far out. What was the name of the neighborhood right behind it? Homestead? Another scary place!

chicagomel, hope you're accepted at pitt! :luck:
