Does anyone have a link for Pitt's dental curriculum? I have seen it before, but cannot seem to find it again. I have searched the website with no luck... Thanks
This 85-chair clinic, divided into four modules or clinics, currently serves our first professional students from the summer of their second year until graduation. Prior to their formal entrance to the CCP program, our students are directly involved with patient care as early as the fall of their first year of training as part of their Introduction to Dentistry & Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Planning courses. All disciplines of dentistry, with the exception of oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry, are represented in this system. (Attention to these departments is provided outside this program.)
Students receive individual curricular schedules during this time, which support exposure to all disciplines of the profession to include patient care, departmental rotations, community-based care; and, in their fourth year, "selective" opportunities.
Are classes held during the summer? Any idea what the 1st year courses are? How quickly do the students get exposed to the clinical aspect of dentistry?
Thanks in advance.
I found the answer to #3 on the website. Quoted below for those interested.
First Professional DMD Program
I know that the first two years focus on the sciences, but I'm just trying to get a better idea of what topics will be reviewed. I have been out of school for a couple of years so I at least want to get my mind warmed up to studying again, beyond simply reviewing all of the DAT material I have.
That sounds great. Thank you for taking the time to provide your input.1. Yes, there are Summer classes - in the first year you get all of August off, but you realistically study for and take boards during that time - so you get about a week and a half off after the Summer Semester before you should start studying. You also get a week between the Spring and Summer semesters, and like 3 weeks off for Christmas.
2. Here's the first year schedule more or less
Fall: Biochem 1, Biochem 2, Intro to dent, Waxing, Dental Anatomy, Microbiology, General Histology, Oral Histology & Embryology, Cariology, Evidence Based Dentistry.
Spring: Gross Anatomy, followed by Skull Anatomy, followed by Head and Neck Anatomy, Physiology, Cariology 2, EBD 2, Amalgam lab and lecture, Perio, Dental Materials, Intro to Dent 2.
Summer: General Pathology, Immunology, Composite lab and lecture, intro to dent 3, Genetics, Perio 2, Occlusion, Materials 2
3. You're in a clinic rotation often the first week of school - meaning you're shadowing, possibly assisting in different general dentistry / specialty areas. As far as actually seeing patients yourself, during the summer of the 1st year, you start getting assigned recall patients, so you need to take health histories, do hard tissue charting, prophy and scaling cleanings, education, sealants if needed, etc - nothing really invasive, but it's incredibly useful to be exposed to patient care so early. Starting the Fall of 2nd year, you can sign up to do restorative work (fillings and such) paired up with a 4th year.
4. Please take this time and relax - don't worry too much about school - you really don't have much free time during the first year, so take this time and RELAX. Read some (for fun) books to keep your mind active if you want, but do NOT attempt to study. All of the classes are taught from the basic level up, so you really don't need to come in with a ton of info already.
Let me know if you've got any other questions!
That sounds great. Thank you for taking the time to provide your input.
The only question I have remaining is what is the situation with laptop computers? Does the school force you to purchase one or do they give you the freedom to choose?
Also, thank you floopy for the link - very useful!
