I made this new thread because the other one was off topic and was not
productive to people who had questions or advice. Productive
advice/questions/criticism only, please.

I am wondering what peoples opinions are on Pitt Pharmacy program waiting
until mid April to disclose who will get accepted. People are going to
have to put down deposits on other schools or may loose interest in Pitt
because of the long wait, in my opinion.

I don’t think they should wait so long. I want to know the decision ASAP
regardless of the outcome so I can plan for the next year.

Also, I found the staff of Pitt Pharm more helpful and personal than other
pharmacy schools. Do others agree or disagree?

I really think they should let applicants know sooner. It is a pain spending 500$ on a deposit at another school just because you haven't heard back yet from Pitt. It’s kind of stressful to wait that long to know about your admittance or not.

I thought the students/faculty at Pitt were very helpful. They were always available when I had a question either email or phone. I visited over the summer and they answered all my questions directly. They are my number one pick and I’m praying I get in.

My dilemma with people (most of them) applying to Pharmacy school and grad schools in general is they apply to ten schools, do no research on any of them ahead of time except for if their coursework meets the requirements, don't visit the campus and don't get to know people their.

Pharmacy school is four years and six figures in cost. People need to do their homework ahead of time and not after they have already applied and are waiting to hear back. People don't buy a house, or a car, or some other expensive purchase with out doing the research. Pharmacy school should be treated the same.

If anyone would have done research on Pitt Pharmacy and went to visit the school, they would have had a better idea about the admission process because Pitt pharmacy told you exactly what they were looking for.

1) Pitt tells you preference is given to Pitt students and they don't hide it. Pitt Pharmacy was my number one choice in high school and that's why I went to Pitt.

2) They tell you that they look heavily on the Pharmcas Essay. They said they look for something unique. I did not know about the scoring guide Fatchance posted previously, and it shows the essay was worth 20 pts.

3) They say they weight your character and extracurricular activates heavily. They emphasized putting down everything you did on your Pharmcas application, regardless of how insignificant it may have been in your life.

4) They said for the interview that the questions would look into your leadership ability, decision making ability and communication ability. They also said the questions would not be solely pharmacy bases.

5) Their website says and they reiterated the importance of visiting the campus before applying (I don't know if that makes a different in admissions or not).

6) They said the GPA was weighted heavier than the PCAT, but both were important.

7) They said they receive 800-900 applicants for 50-60 seats and said it was very competitive.

If people would have looked at Pitt ahead of time, and visited the campus, they would know exactly what Pitt is looking for. They would know if it was a good fit for them or if they should look elsewhere for pharmacy school.

People have a right to say what they want to say, and some people did their research. I wish others would too before they applied.

I don't want to get in cyber-arguments with people I have never met because I know nothing about you or where you are coming form and you know nothing about me.

This post was ruined a long time ago. It started productive and now it is not.

I know that it's a while to wait but pitt told me they wait this long so they can thoroughly review their candidates. I'd rather have a pharmacy School that took a while to let us know and really looked at our credentials. A pharmacy school that reviews too fast could overlook excellent students.

I really like your post on the other thread because it really summed up a bunch of complaining from others. If these people would of just went to the school like me, you, and twinspharm did ahead of time ( I went last June) they cold have asked all the questions they wanted. Instead they apply knowing very little and then complain about the admission process after the fact.

When I visited I got all of the same answers you did which helped. Everyone was nice and pitt has an excellent reputation. They didn't hide a thing and were more helpful than the many other pharmacy schools I visited. Hope we both get accepted next fall.

I only talked to Marcia B. once and the next time she saw me she recognized and actually know my name. Most other pharmacy schools don't get to know their applicants this well, let alone their students.

Best of luck to all Pitt Pharmacy applicants

Stats don't mean anything. I would trade stats for an acceptance letter to Pitt any day.

Is their interview open or closed file?

It’s closed and they tell you that. So basically when they asked me why I chose pharmacy I just kinda regurgitated the essay I wrote for pharmcas.

It’s closed. I felt kind of awkward pretty much running though a lot of stuff in Pharmcas and my Pharmcas essay. Hey Willrocks, do you know of any pharmacy schools that are open interviews?

Does anyone know if math classes are part of you science GPA or your non science GPA?

I assume non science but I am not sure.

I'm pretty sure math classes are non-science. This depend on which college you go to because colleges may have different regulations.

Are all of the classes in the pharmacy program taken with all the rest of the class, or only some? I like the sense of camaraderie that would come with taking all the classes with all of my mates.

Yeah you are with all 108 students for a majority of the time.

For example if you go to pitt pharmacy, you will have to take electives that relate to pharmacy at pitt. You will not be with the rest of your class then. Also you won't be with them for rotations and that type of stuff.

But for the majority of your time you will be with the rest of your class.

I'm looking forward to actually getting to know the people in my class. At my undergrad classes I almost never get a chance to get to know people because I only see them every now and then.

They offered, Feb 27th, March 1st, and 2nd all at various times.

Pitt says that they conduct interviews into March, but they never said when they actually finish. Does anyone have an idea on when they stop offering interviews? I haven't been asked yet, and I'm basically losing hope. By the way, I'm a Pitt student already.

I really don't know if they are giving out more interviews. If enough people declined from the second wave of interviews they gave out, they may give out more.

hi guys,

I was wondering if anybody got declined yet. I haven't heard anything back yet...at all. I got an email saying that pitt recieved my application back in the begining of January, but thats it. I emailed someone and got nothing back yet. I will probably decline it even if i get an interview, because i got into LECOM and I like the 3 year path way better...but it would be nice to know sometime soon. Im figuring i got declined, or they are waiting until they send out their acceptance letters to send out the decline letters too..i dont know. I just know that PITT is kinda unorganized when it comes to every thing, another reason i wanna get out of the PITT system.

thanks in advance for the feed back.

I dont think you will recieve anything stating you didn't earn an interview. I think you will just be left hanging.

I know other schools send notification when you don't get an interview. Actually Duq just sent one and people i've talked to got them for schools they didn't get an interview to. I don't know why a school wouldn't send one. But i guess we are talking about Pitt.

They may send one. I'm not completely sure.

Reviewing last year's Pitt thread the first applicants that got accepted that posted on these boards did so on 3/19.

I hope we find out that soon, but when I asked at my interview they said Pitt Pharm would send out notifications between April 10 and April 15.

I got an email from Pitt yesterday telling me I got accepted and will get further info in the mail soon. I will probably decline - really nice school with nice faculty, but all the students I met there looked dead as ghosts.

Are you a current Pitt student, out of curiosity, and when did you interview?

On the Pitt website it states they "operate on a discrete admissions cycle that ends in the Spring when all applicants are notified of their status"...Interesting.

Not a Pitt student. I'm working currently and attending Rutgers part-time to fulfill my requirements. Interviewed 2/16.

It seems the posters from last year were also told the same thing, but some heard back early.

More specifically, people started hearing back from Pitt around the 20th of March last year. Others in the posts mentioned "just getting their acceptances" around the 15th of April. I don't like knowing someone already got an acceptance email this year because I thought we all would find out in mid april. Now I'll be worrying every day that I don't get an email.

Me Too!

Were the people who found out early the ones with conditional acceptance? If this is true, and I don't know if it is, it would make sense because they interviewed before the non-conditional students interviewed.

That's unfortunately not possible, the conditional acceptance students are current pitt students and the poster above that already got accepted is not a pitt student.

I too am disappointed not to have heard anything and that Pitt apparently did not stick to their letting all applicants know at the same time.

If you read the above quote as meaning that everyone finds out at the same exact time then you may be reading into it. "Ends in the Spring" is very general. They are not saying April 15th for example. They are also saying "notified of their status" rather than "notified of their status at the same time." I don't think anything in that sentence suggests that they make all of their decisions and mailings at the same time. Basically, the way I read it, they are saying "All applicants are notified of their status in the Spring" - nothing else more specific than that. Perhaps there is some other info you are going on though.

Ya I know what you mean, but they stated they would let us know between April 10 and April 15. Now I'm just worrying if I will get notified also.

April 15, 2010
Admissions decisions are finalized and all applicants are mailed their status.

This is directly from the Pitt Pharm website admissions calendar. Kind of confusing. It sort of indicates that "all" applicants will be mailed their status at the same time, however, it could mean that by the 15th they will have decided on everybody and those who haven't found out yet will be mailed their status.

That's nice man!! Congratulations! Hoping that the rest of us will all get some sort of message soon 😀

accepted as well! not sure where i'll be attending quite yet.

I applied in December last year.. but still no news from Pitt....and didn't even got an interview yet...
Does this mean that I'm rejected automatically???
Can anyone answer for this??

Hey for you guys that already got accepted what were your GPA and PCATS if you don't mind sharing. I'm just wondering where me and my bro fall in to the people already accepted?

Thanks

Anybody have recommendations for how to start looking for housing?

Shadyside is nice but expensive. If your going to live in South Oakland, Dawson street is nice. I've already been looking for condos down there if I get accepted.

Pitt doesn't continue to do interviews after they've started making decisions on applicants. Sorry, but I'm almost certain that means you will not be going to Pitt this year. Good luck with your other schools.

I would stay away from South Oakland, or Oakland in general. I had to deal with way too much, from terrible landlords, to home break-ins, to car break-ins...ugh. It's right next to the Hill District, which is an extremely crappy and crime-ridden part of town.

Shadyside is ok, I like Squirrel Hill better personally. The housing may be a little more, but it's a great area. It's the jewish part of town. Also the bus runs through both neighborhoods like once every 5 minutes into Oakland, so it's very convenient (I guess Pitt still gives a "free" bus pass that you pay for in your fees anyway.)

I'm not the best person to answer this though, because I pretty much hated all the areas around Pitt. I never really felt safe there, but again, I had to deal with some really crappy stuff.

3.57 GPA with degree in Chemistry
4.0 GPA at Rutgers - took 6 courses to fulfill pre-professional requriements
7 years experience in petroleum industry as lab supervisor
97 PCAT composite

I just declined the offer from Pittsburgh. Like I said before, I was really impressed with the school, but I couldn't get over how dead the students looked during my visit. Hopefully this frees up a spot for someone else who will want it more than me. Good luck to everyone.

Cool, that's awfully nice of you. Where are you going next year?

As of right now, it is the University of Buffalo. I'm waiting for UCSF's decision. That would be my top choice, but there are some things that are holding me back a little, mostly the price of the school and the prices in general in California. If I hear back from Rutgers, they might come into play due to the cheap, in-state tuition I would have.

Got my acceptance email yesterday at 4pm. So excited to go to my number one choice. See you all in the fall. Here are my stats.

3.3 overall
B.S. Nuclear Engineering Technology
6 yrs. Military
83 PCAT

just declined my acceptance to pittsburgh, hope that opens up a seat to someone who really wants it! good luck all

Just got my acceptance to pitt!!! It's gonna be between Pitt and Ohio state - any thoughts?

Hey - I'm really surprised u would choose buffalo over Pitt.. What sold you on buffalo? I do agree about the students at Pitt lol. I'm also waiting on rutgers - it's really stressing me out cuz they do interviews so late in the process.
