Hey guys! I was fortunate enough to be accepted into 3 schools. I was pretty much set on going to pitt but something tells me that I will be happier at NYU. I know there is a huge cost difference between two schools but I think Pitt was really boring when I visited. I was truly impressed with NYU but the only thing that stops me going there is the fact that they have been known for weeding students. The last time I heard they don't do this anymore but whatnis going on now seriously? As for Pitt, I just think that it lacks diversity and I am afraid that I will not enjoy it. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

It really really amazes me that these rumors still exist. NYU does not weed out its students. Final answer. Don't base your decision on this.

As Mackchops have stated, there is no weeding out at NYU. Don't believe the rumors.

Where would these kind of rumors start? It's in NYU's best interest to get you graduated... they receive more tuition money, expand their alumni network, possibly receive donations from you when you leave.

If you work hard I really doubt any school would just 'weed you out'. :\

This is not a rumor but mast majority of student find this out once they attend the interview. NYU adds roughly 100 foreign trained dentists and students into the second year class. So your graduating class consists of over 320 students. Whether the addition is beneficial or not is another topic of discussion. However, it would have been better if they stated that somewhere on their website instead of breaking the news to the interviewees on the interview day who including me end up looking at each other with amazement.

Don't get me wrong, I rather be surprised on the interview day than on my first day.

I want to ask my concern of large class size of nyu. I got accepted by nyu now. I liked it a lot better than columbia. When do nyu students have their own chairs? Do you feel the large class size means more connections--chances to offer and be offered when you open your practice? Do you feel much prepared compared to columbia--it's just what I heard.

Well I persoanlly know someone from the 05 class and she said 50 people got the boot in D1. So is that still a rumor??

A lot of people dropped out of the '05 graduating class because their freshman year (2001) 9/11 happened and a good number of people couldn't handle the idea of staying in new york. The students chose to leave -- NYU did not kick them out.

About the size, you don't get your own chair but finding chairs for your patients is never a problem. And I think a student graduating from NYU is much better prepared to practice compared to someone coming from Columbia -- CU's curriculum is (they will admitt) designed around the notion that dental school shouldn't be four years long. They expect you to do a residency after you graduate and something like 95% of their graduates do just that.

You don't really need the iPone, I look around and a lot of people do have it, I wish I had it lol...peer pressure? i dunno, but I don't have it, you'll survive if you don't end up getting it...
People say verison is really good but I'm with neither ATT nor verison...

...oops...wrong thread

The large class size has some pluses and some minuses. Which matter more to you will depend on the individual. For me, the pluses certainly out weight the minuses. One example: because we have more students, we have more faculty. This increases the chance that I can find a faculty that meshes well with me and this is very valuable. I love my "go to" faculty both others just frustrate me and I them.

go to nyu and enjoy whatever personal time you have in Manhattan...versus dreary old Pittsburgh

Go to USC. Avoid dreary old Pitt and NYU. Cost is comparable.

NYU doesn't weed people out at all. I went there for D1 and transferred to a Canadian school (I'm considered a "drop-out"). 4 of my classmates transferred or went to other dental schools, including class pres.

Here's the lowdown: huge class size, very uncaring professors, unthinkable tuition, and 120 AP students (they cheat alot... not a rumor) in D2. Not to mention the tuition. I'd say avoid it if you can, unless you really want to try NYC. The curriculum is tough if you want to do good.

I say UPitt FTW.

I can't believe that stupid rumor about "weeding" students out still exists. I graduated from NYU this past May. Yes -it's a huge class. No -there are not a lot of students that get kicked out. The ones that get kicked out are for academic reasons not because they want to weed you out.

I think out of a class of around 330 students- I know of maybe 7-8 that did not make it all the way through.

Because of the large class size it may seems like a lot of people don't make it through but the perecentage as compared to other dental schools if you take into consideration the class size.

Enough with these B.S. rumors.

What a load of crap.

The class pres transferred to be closer to his family... I talked with him the other day and he truly misses NYU.

Uncaring professors? I don't even know how to comment on this. Absolutely not true. I took classes at 3 different undergrads (2 really good ones!) and would pit the "caring-ness" of the NYU faculty against anyone from these other schools any day of the week.

The AP students are "cheaters" because they're international? Such a wrong statement on so many levels... and even if they DID cheat, what does it matter to you? They are ranked on a different scale than the 4-year students.

NYU isn't perfect. No school is. But please don't slander my school with lies.

There are cheaters at every school. Difficult to identify them. I suggest letting the system weed them out while you put your energy into doing what you can do to accomplish your own goals.

nyu doesn't weed out students. People who consistently fail after being given oppurtunities to remediate are let go. In my class of ~250, about 5-6 students didn't make it all the way

i've noticed it's students that are scorned for some personal reasons that spread these rumors; they don't represent the opinion of the majority of people here

i've really enjoyed my experience at nyu so far; the only thing I don't like about it is the tuition cost; if you have a cheaper option go for it

what is it about the pit/pen v nyu threads? apparently both schools admit the indecisive.

Like Mackchops said, I still talk regularly with the class prez and he really misses NYU and would come back in a heartbeat if his decision to leave were not for his family.

For the most part, I haven't found the professors to be the least bit uncaring. Having known alkohulk for about a year, however, I can safely say that I find him to be particularly bitter and abrasive... as with everything on SDN, take his words with a grain of salt...
