Pitt: Loved the school during interview day. Not set on it but interested in academic medicine.

UMD: Close to family and ~8k/year cheaper in terms of tuition.

Dilemma: I want to be back in the DC area for residency.

Pitt. If you're interested in academic medicine, Pitt would be the best way to go. You love the school too! 8k/yr in the grand scheme of a medical education isn't that much, and coming from Pitt you'll have no trouble matching to DC. Just my 0.02 though!

I think either would be fine. I don't think you need to go to UMD to be in DC. But I also think you do not need to go to Pitt to do academic medicine or for the slight prestige boost. Many UMD med students end up wanting to stay in the area and work in MD/DC. I don't think it's that you have to by any means - it's just that they enjoy it there so they stay. I would choose where you think you'll be happier

Pitt is solid and will set you up for anything you want and Pittsburgh is great. If anything it would actually open doors for you to match in DC. Also keep in mind, Pitt has Pass/Fail preclinical years and UMD is graded A/B/C/D/F which may or may not effect the culture depending on how you see it. My vote is for Pitt.
