how is their dental school? are people able to get good fellowships? is it one of the really competitive places to get into?
thanks!

I interviewed at Pitt and only have good things to say about the school, the people, and the education. Please keep in mind I do not have an abyss of knowledge regarding Pitt, but from what I saw and spoke to students/faculty/interviewer I really felt comfortable. The program is really well balanced, and the faculty was very down to earth. The sim-lab was immaculate and set up in a very a conducive manner which gives students a lot of personalized attention. More over the people (students and faculty) are just really down to earth. There are no pretenses or airs and many people chose to do GP at Pitt. I don't knwo the figures of those who specialize, but my feeling is that no matter where you come from, if you want to specialize you better bust your butt and do well. In the end your GPA and Boards will get you into a specialty program, not the name of the school........

thanks for the reply! what kind of grades/numbers do you need to get accepted (or at least an interview) at pitt? i know the medical school is pretty competitive (vs some other med schools), so I wondered if it was the same for the dental school. do they give preference to pa residents?
thanks!

Hello,

I am actually starting dental school at Pitt in September, and I totally have to agree with Shootin4par's observations about the faculty and students.

I had the best time and interview at Pitt because I was very comfortable and I felt at home.

Keep in mind that I am Canadian, so my standards to get an interview might be different than yours...but my stats were:

3.40 overall
3.42 science
19's and 20's on Canadian DAT
plus, I have a lot of voluteering/shadowing experience.

I hope this helps, and good luck

I think Pitt is one of those schools that REALLY looks at the applicant for more than just their numbers. They really want to get to know their applicants and see if they will be the type of person patients will want to come to. I think UPitt is pretty cool about the scores, but to be competitive i think that the scores should be the following:

DAT:18
PAT:18
GPA:3.2+
Science GPA: 3.2+
GREAT Letters of Rec. Not just about how good a student, but how great as a person you are.
Plenty of volunteering and shadowing.

I really think that Pitt is a special school and is over looked because people think of Pittsburgh and imagine the smoke stacks of the past.

If you're interested in Pitt, the brochure and literature on the school doesn't do it justice. Definitely go see it! And talk to a lot of students!!!
