Now that Ive gotten into dental school, my next obsession is figuring out possible arenas of dentistry that sound interesting. I know i know; i will change my mind a lot as i experience it all, but i just wanted to see how many people out of a class of 80 actual decide to specialize and how many actually get into a program. (Im kinda liking prostho...)

the most important thing that i can tell you is not to go in expecting to specialize. more often then not something comes up or you get so worn down with school that you ultimately may decide to not specialize. from what i hear, specializing isn't very hard to do but from my own personal expereince (i'm a first year at pitt), a lot of us came in with hopes of specializing. now half-way through second semester, i'd say 25-50% of us have given up hope of that and just want to graduate. dental school is *intense* and i know the next 4 years wil be a strugle, i couldn't do another 2 years of this.

plus, you never know what may come up. like i thought i'd love to do prosto until i found out it's one of the hardest liscensing exams out there. and dental materials kicked my butt so i think that might be a sign that it's not a good idea.

so the best thing i can tell you is to come in with an openmind and see what happens before you decide. though it's not too hard to get into a program, just keep your grades up from the get-go and do well on boards. 🙂

hey thanks so much for the input! ive heard that and I know that I will most likely want to get straight into general practice, but even still, I was just curious . See you in August!
