california? north dakota? ohio? new york? i have no idea and was wondering if someone could help me out. also, how much does the highest area pay (for a 40 hr/week)? thank you much.

I thought EM docs received an hourly salary and their employer (ie, hospital administration) decides on this?

Thus wouldn't it be possible that EM docs in the same state but different hospitals would receive much different hourly compensation?

There are great paying jobs just about anywhere if you can find them, and if there are any openings. They tend to get filled quickly by people known to the group....
For example, in the SF Bay area, there are only 3 true fee for service jobs. They are VERY sought after jobs that you will never see advertised in any rag. Openings are filled instantly by word of mouth, usually to candidates that are known to a person in the group....They are true democratic open book groups (AAEM's holy grail)
One can make upwards of $400k (working 12 8's, 2-3 pts/hr with a great payor mix) since 100% of the fees go to the EM doc (minus overhead costs for the group). There is no middle man/management to take their cut of the fee.....

Hospital administration? Very rarely are the work arrangements such that the hospital admin decides how much we get paid. In general, we're contract workers. A group of physicians agree to provide services in exchange for the right to bill the patients for services rendered. I'd always assumed the other hospital-based specialties were the same. In fact, I know that the radiology and anesthesiology guys get paid that way too, in general.

I think based on some of the recent surveys I've seen, the Southeast as a region has the highest paid EM docs.

Dear Residents and Fellows,

Here is the recent AGMA compensation survey. There are variables and negotiating room, but typically, a CEO or principal owner knows the standard and will try not to exceed (in base pay) the compensation beyond his/her geographic area. Our link below may be of some use towards answering your questions:

AGMA Physician Compensation Survey

All the best,

lastest figures: Northeast sucks the most, California and west coast next suckiest, Midwest pretty decent, South rocks.
