Hey everyone,

I am wondering what everyone thinks of places to be in terms of those who are 25ish and single. I would think that moving to more rural areas makes for a dull single's scene. I'd like to move to an area where other people in my boat rather than being surrounded by married people or the other end, a bunch of college kids only.

Ex: Boston, NYC, Palo Alto/SF, LA, Phily, Chicago, St Louis, Milwaukee, Ann Arbor, San Diego

Ann Arbor?

Add Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Miami, Tampa, Atlanta,

and every other city with populations greater than 200,000.

salt lake city = mormons

tampa = scientologists

atlanta = smaller than you realize until you are there

the scientologists in the tampa area are largely concentrated in downtown clearwater, which is across tampa bay and not too close to any of the USF-affiliated hospitals. if i've dealt with any such patients thus far, i don't know it.

as for the overall singles scene - south tampa is where it's concentrated. however it seems that many tampa women, at least out in a lot of the bars, dress like total ******. i'm not talking sexy and slinky ****** - i'm talking really revoltingly slutty stuff. certainly not something most doctors would want to marry. if you're looking for a hookup you're barking up the right tree though. my theory is that the weather being so warm allows girls to wear really skimpy stuff almost year round (it was 80 degree 2 days ago) - clothes feed the attitude feeds the clothes... and repeat.

maybe it's because i've been here too long, but i certainly would not nominate tampa as a particularly great place for young single people.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about Ann Arbor in that list. Sure, there are a lot of grad students/residents here... but they all seemed to be wrapped up in their own little world and there really are no other "young professionals"... and the 25+ plus gets completely overshadowed by the undergrad crowd around town.

It's actually one of the reasons why I'm looking elsewhere (I'm here now) for residency...

Any major city will be reasonable. As a former single guy I can vouch for Chicago as a fantastic place for single young professionals.

 Relating scientologists to TPA is hilarious. Even in Clearwater they're a non-entity. In my 25 years of living here, my one experience with them is after a Lightning game a couple of them were handing out videos.

As mlw said, Tampa's definitely full of sluts. Overall I think it's a pretty ghetto city. For whatever reason, it revolves around sex - famous for two things, strip clubs and sex shops.

i certainly would not nominate tampa as a particularly great place for young single people.

ABSOLUTELY

Couldn't agree more. There lots of polyester, lycra and implants but not much else.😱 :scared: 😱

So between mlw03, (nicedream) and me, we are agreed--Tampa is NOT the place to be

Being a former and future rural guy, I would say there is plenty of single action in those areas. The only draw back would be if your looking to date another professional. Those are kinda rare, at least others your age. But if you dont mind dating non-professionals, rural is a great place to go.

Tampa sure sounds dirty or at least parts of it. I'm not looking for scum or intend to go to a place just for that. I'd like to be in area where others are in my age group so I don't stick out like a sore thumb. In terms of getting married, if it's going to happen, then it will. And I'm not confined to professionals. Somebody can be smart and not be a freakin doctor, scientist, etc. So, I'm just looking for opinions from people who have lived in the places that I mentioned for a good amount of time and can kind of give me their opinions about the single life. An interview day does no justice to a city, and if I'm going somewhere for three years, I don't want to be rotting away by having nothing to do or people to hang out with minus fellow residents. Boston and Palo Alto/SF had some good programs, but is it worth it to live there at my age? A program can be as good as it wants to be, but if it's in a sucky place like Rochester, MN, why go there?

I would second Austin, and consider Nashville, too.

I have to disagree. I spent 25ish doing residency #1 in NYC. Now at 27ish I am doing residency #2 in Nashville. As a single female in both places, NYC wins big time. There is an endless number of places to go out in NYC, and everywhere you go (restaurants, bars, parks, stores, etc.) you will run into fellow yuppie professionals in all fields - finance, medicine, enterntainment, arts, etc. Nashville is waaaaay smaller. Prior to my move south, my Nashville hospital sent a newsletter asking if I had a spouse who wanted to join the Wive's Club (well it's called the "Housestaff Alliance" but every name in that newsletter was a female.) At orientation it seemed like lots of the housestaff were married, hence the wives all have their own club. My NYC hospital could have cared less about the housestaff, forget their wives/spouses because most residents probably didn't have one.

I have to disagree.

I can see that coming from NYC. But it appeared to be a fun place with lots of places to meet people outside of the hospital too. But, I'm married with kids, I just figured all the live music and restaurants would be great if single. It seemed a lot like a more conservative Austin when I visited.

I have to second...Chicago is an awesome city, definitely up there at the top of the list...The only drawback in my mind is for people from warmer parts of the country, the weather does take some getting used to. If not for that, the most intense part of winter from, say, Dec-Feb, I'd suggest that it might be the ideal 20something city.

(Not that it's only cold during those months -- that's just the worst of it)

Just some thoughts from my experience and word of mouth pieced together. New York, Boston, SF are givens of course...Miami's a lot of fun but can rub people the wrong way, too. Places like StL and Milwaukee (just about equivalent, really...do you like Miller or Bud?) on your original list clearly aren't really in the same grouping as the others, but once you find the right spots, they can really be hidden gems of cities with things to do, more young people than you'd think, and definitely cheaper than the big ones. And if you're willing to skip over the really big name sex appeal cities for ones like that, for what it's worth I like Minneapolis, more than the other two from what I've seen. Like the quote said, really any reasonably sized city has at least pockets of young people somewhere around, they just might be harder to find and, admittedly, fewer in some places than others.

Beyond that, I'm finding this a bit of an odd thread...Why so many people are talking about Tampa I have no idea, nor do I know why no one's mentioned, say, Seattle.

Anyone have thoughts on Philly?

salt lake city = mormons

Yeah, not so fast.

Salt Lake City = more non-Mormons than Mormons and is particularly skewed in the medical/grad student/research environment here.

For example, my incoming resident class of 32 interns were 30 non-Mormons and 2 Mormons, with people coming in from all over the country incl Texas, Cali, Washington, NY, Florida, Wisconsin, etc...

This is typical of the residents/grad students/etc in Salt Lake. Many people come here from all over b/c there is great training and it is a fantastic place to live, especially if you love the outdoors!

Not sure why anyone would add MKE to that list...bit of a bore (ok, that's an understatement).

I think SF definitely belongs on that list... small size city with a major population makes for a close-knit, dense, energized city. I'm probably a bit biased though.

I'm a big fan of NYC in terms of singles life and things to do.... but it's expensive, crowded, and can feel overwhelming. I think Boston feels like a college town, and I'm getting beyond that.

DC should probably be thrown up on the list. I really like going out around there, seems to be a good scene of young professionals.

Definatly not St. Louis. 👎 and I'm thinking Milkwaukee probably isn't any better

The times I've been out in Atlanta, I felt that the scene was a healthy mix of redneck and ghetto. Entertaining at first, but that would get old fast.

Something to consider about SF and Northern Cali, I get the impression that there are a lot more "young single professional" males than females. Great for women, a little bit tougher for a single (heterosexual) male "on the prowl."

San Diego is awesome, but I got the impression that the social/nightlife scene was dominated by the military types stationed there.

I feel like you can't go wrong with Chicago, Miami, Austin, Seattle, or DC. I don't know much about NYC/Boston/Philly.

In my experience, Philly is a veyr good town for young professionals. Ton of restaurants, clubs, social events, etc. to keep you busy. Obviously not NYC simply because of size, but on par with the other large cities.

And regarding Salt Lake and Tampa, lighten up people.. I kid!! Sheesh.

But I have relatives in Tampa and honestly, "young single professionals" is not the first phrase I think of when I arrive there.

Having lived in chicago, that's a ridiculously low ranking... there are so many young professionals in that city and there's so much to do that there's no way it's 38th in nightlife, 22nd overall...

So easy to have a good time and meet new people in Chi-town.

I believe Denver/Boulder has been ranked very highly in these surveys in the past. And by not being on the overpriced coasts, you'll actually have money left from your salary for beer.

Ha, that NBC study puts San Jose AND Oakland > San Francisco.

I lived in the Bay Area for 5 years... and other than going to the Tech Museum one Sunday afternoon... I can't remember hanging out in SJ. Ever.

And the study takes into account "number of toy stores."

AWESOME.

I agree... lots of married folk in the midwest. I would say it's a better single life for the girl, however. At professional bars, you can find some professional men, but far too many blonde bimbo bar flys.

HAHAHA they have Cincinnati nightlife as #1. I lived there for a number of years, and man, there are a couple of cool places (Mt. Adams/Hyde Park) but I can't imagine it really having the #1 nightlife for singles.

Yah, there is no way in hell that cincinnati has the best nightlife??....I think they writer was obviously on some sort of medication when they visited,I have never had so many racial slurs thrown at me as when I have gone out in cincy!...also suprised that Columbus was #11 best city....hmm not sure how Ohio is on the up and up b.c I sure would like to know the place these singles are at here lol!😀

Agree 100% here.

On Saturday nights around 10PM the flow of traffic is always jammed on the Bay Bridge headed into San Francisco, never out.

I don't think guys need these methodologically flawed studies to tell them what the best places for singles are. For a guy in his 20s it's pretty easy to figure out and has already been posted above:

NYC
LA or OC
Miami
San Francisco
Chicago
etc.

One that hasn't been mentioned that I definitely think deserves consideration:

Scottsdale, AZ.

I want to put a plug in for DC, too. Lived there for 2 years between undergrad and med school. The singles scene is ridiculous...I have yet to be in a place with so many young, single (and, for the most part, attractive) girls....more approachable than Beantown girls, more educated (or so it would seem) than the Dallas ladies (no offense to you Texans, just my personal experience), not as pretentious as so many of the ladies I've run into in New York....

The cost of living is, of course, a downside.

add san diego and orange co. to that list. plenty of restaurants, bars, and entertainment for the single, professional male/female. has gorgeous weather and a laid-back atmosphere. the downside is the traffic on the 405 and 5 freeways during rush hour.

Looks like a lot of the posts point to DC. However, anesthesia is not strong in the DC area. Sure, Hopkins is about an 1.5 hours away, but that's Baltimore and the program is kind of rough on residents. What a hole in the wall city! Sorry to offend anyone. If I ever change out of the specialty (hopefully not one of those), then it will be an option.

i agree that list is so way off.

by far for nightlife, single or not, is NYC and Miami. I have lived in Miami and have a house there, spend many months in NYC.
Lived, in Chicago, Ann arbor, and many other places growing up from East to West. By far, NYC and Miami are top.
Chicago,
La, SF, and DC are way up there too.
that list ranks, singles seperate from night life but aren't they the same?
either way, if you are smooth enough, or good looking enough, or confident enough, or rich enough, you can meet people of the opposite anywhere..the most rural to the most urban areas. shoot i just met and went out with a girl from NYC while I was visiting some relatives in DC then met a girl the next day from New orleans.. the point is if u can meet people anywhere if you have some of the above factors.
😱 😎 👍

I can speak for southern california...

Orange County: Lots of young, HOT, singles and great night-life! You just have to be willing to pay the price of living in the O.C.

San Diego: Beautiful city, great night-life, and lots of other great cultural and outdoor activities to enjoy southern california life if you're dating 😉

Los Angeles: A little too busy for my taste. In my opinion, it's a great place to visit on a weekend night to hit the bars and clubs but not good for meeting potential *quality* dating material.

Sure, you can pimp or she-pimp wherever you would like, but that's not what I started the thread for. But then I guess picking up/screwing a new chick everyday is today's gold standard of single living. Now, we can wonder why America's relationships/marriages usually end up in the trash. Enough of my social commentary.

And just wondering, do you consider yourself smooth, good looking, rich, or all three? Sound like some sort of player. Do you brag on forums usually? Reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite.

never saw that movie. so cant comment. no i was just saying that its pretty easy to have fun and meet interesting and educated people in any city if YOU have a good enough personality. being any of the other things helps with confidence i suppose. i don't brag on forums at all. i dont need to.

oh and what do u mean by player? does it count if i am not in a serious relationship with anyone and dating more than one person, and the people i am dating know it and are fine with it? does that count?.

Awesome! I'm probably going to end up there for residency. What is the best city/town in OC with singles?
If I were to live in San Diego, what would be the most ideal part of the city to live if want to be around the happening places?

I agree with you Disciple. Living off & on in Arizona for 15 years I had to respond. Scottsdale, Phoenix, & surrounding cities have every type of race, creed, color, shade of beauty you can imagine.
If your a player you've probably already visited. If your trying to settle down you can find your wife here.
Restaurants, bars, clubs, enough outdoor activity (mountains, Sedona, Grand Canyon, etc), concerts, sports events (new football stadium, Superbowl next year; Phx Suns consistently give a reason to come out & watch), etc.
Short, cheap, flights to Vegas, Denver, Cali, & Mexico = yes.
Yea, a little hot in the summer, but today I walked out the house with shorts, sandals, and a t-shirt in the afternoon.......

The best cities in Orange County for singles are Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Seal Beach.

As for San Diego, as long as you're reasonably close to the downtown area, you'll be good to go! At least then you can your (limited) free time in residency 🙂

Phoenix was ranked in some study earlier this year as the best place to be young and single, especially for guys. Phoenix had the highest ratio of Women:Men out of the cities tested which were all the big ones. Also with just general fun stuff. Nice weather helps etc.

Oddly enough I also just learned scottsdale has the most transexuals walking around in the country-largely due to the biggest tranny surgeon being in scottsdale-did not come across this first hand but we had a lecture on it-bizzarre.

The latest issue of National Geographic has a picture that shows what cities have more single women vs single men. It is funny, that many places in California have a very large overabundance of single men, and many places on the east coast have many more single women. So, if you're a woman, go west. If you're a man, head east.

Im gonna vote

1. NYC(best looking people hands down, more energy than any other city in the world, unlimited choices)
4. Miami(style, southbeach)
4. Chicago(size is great, closest to nyc in terms of choice, people bit on the big side in terms of weight, cold)
5. LA(too spread out to get together lots of people consistently, not really a professionals dominated scene)
6. SF(more for a bit older crowd, kinda nerdy, not the best looking crowds, bit too dressed down for me)
7. DC(small, can be homogeneous, too expensive for what you get)
9. Philly (on the upswing, still small- shooting distance from dc and nyc)
9. Boston (very young crowds, not very stylish, very pub dominated)
10.Baltimore (just because I have a soft spot for the place, dangerous, dirty, but tons of bars)
Don't know seattle, atlanta, houston, portland, minneapolis, dallas.
Austin and Ann Arbor are college towns. 😀

Does this study take into account the large number of single men on the West coast who swing the other way?😉

NYC best looking people hands down?

That's hilarious! Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of good looking people in NY but the average is so far below that of San Diego or Austin that I'm shocked by the statement. You could argue for NY as most fashionable or something like that, but natural beauty? I don't think so.

If I were making a list of most materialistic, it would look a lot like your list.
