This is kind of specific, but i'm moving back to Houston this wed. and my MCAT is May 16th. I absolutely am not able to study at home. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place in H-town that is open 24 hours, or really late in the night where I could go "lock" myself in and study. Seems like Rice and U of H libraries have bad hours over the weekends.

Thanks

I'm assuming you need wireless for practice tests. Some of my study hang-outs are:

-Salentos in the village (closes at 10pm, no wireless after 6pm on wed/sat, also it can be a bit loud sometimes - not the best for practice tests)

-the starbucks on shepard close to richmond (unprotected wireless), very quiet and people are mostly studying

-crossroads in the village (i think they close at 10, 11 on weekends)

-there's a 24hour starbucks on westhiemer at the galleria, not sure about wireless at that one though, and i've never been so i don't know if it's quiet

-you can try the student center at Rice (i'm there right now...) as well or the jones business school at Rice (but I'm not sure if their hours would be better than those of the Rice library)

-annie's is a cute place - it's in the village on the corner of morningside and university - looks like a residential house - very cute and quiet, but they close at 6pm

-i've also studied at restaurants such as the black walnut cafe(rice village), they have a quiet corner near the back, and if it's not hot outside is nice

Good luck! I'm leaving on tuesday to take the MCAT in Dallas... you can take over my spot at these places 🙂

Here's a Starbucks open 24 hours a day:

2521 Post Oak Blvd
Houston, TX
77056

I think this night thing is a bad plan, though. You'll be messing with your sleep cycles before the test!

Wow thanks, just what I was looking for.

Don't worry, once it gets closer to the MCAT I plan on getting some better sleep. I also plan, maybe starting thurs. to start getting up very early, and studying instead of getting to bed late. That way I can get used to thinking in the morning, which I don't usually do haha.

What are the hours at the student center, and what is their policy on "non students" studying there?

this is their website. So actually the library has better hours, i think. But if you get sick of the library you can go there 🙂 Plus there's a coffehouse that's open till 4pm.

As for their policy on "non-students"... I'm not really a student either (I'm an alum) and nobody's ever asked me or looked at me funny. 😀
I think it's open to everyone. Plus you have access to the "Rice Visitor" wireless network, so it must be ok.

I the 24 hour starbucks i was referring to is the one on Post Oak. If you go by the Galleria you can't miss it.
