Plane geometry example??

i hate geometry with a passion but that's besides the point...

I cannot get my mind to grasp the top example problem in the Kaplan Blue book (page 55) on triangles.

if anyone would be so kind to help me make sense of it? Id be very grateful 🙂

I have the KBB, but is yours the 7th edition because Plane Geometry doesn't start until the 600's. Let me know what problem it is and I should be able to help you out!
