I am a US IMG who will be applying for psychiatry in the 2020 match. I am interested in doing an away rotation in psychiatry to get a sense for the culture of other hospitals and to make a good impression at places where I would like to match. As an IMG, I know that I will be fighting an uphill battle and I would like to maximize my chances at matching with a program that is a good fit for me. I am doing all of my core rotations at one hospital in NY.

Could you all please recommend some IMG-friendly hospitals that would be a potentially good fit for me?

I would like to ultimately match at a hospital that will give me good psychotherapy training, especially from a psychodynamic approach. I am also potentially interested in research, and would like to gain more exposure during residency (and even during the 4th year elective if possible). My research interests include the neurobiology of mood disorders and borderline personality disorder; I also would be intrigued to study the effects of mindfulness and meditation on the course of psychiatric illness. I am interested in a hospital that has a culture of open-mindedness, and where attendings and senior residents are able and willing to be mentors. I would prefer to match in the Midwest (especially around Chicago) or the Northeast.

I'm not sure how relevant it is, but I scored a 239 on step I and have honored the two rotations (internal medicine and family medicine) that I have completed so far. I am currently in my psych rotation and the experience has confirmed my commitment to a career in psychiatry.

Thanks!
