Planning a schedule for college/help

I'm trying to plan out a schedule for college before I attend orientation in two months and was hoping SDNers would be willing to help me out!

College classes taken in High School + AP (How many courses do you think the courses below will take out from my GE requirement?)
- Phil 10 (Ethics, Metaphysics, Epistemology) 3 semester units; 4 quarter
- Phil 65 (Critical Thinking) 3 semester units; 4 quarter units
- Math 22 ( Pre calculus) 3 semester units; 4 quarter units
- Foreign Language 1 5 semester units
- Foreign Language 2 5 semester units
- Asian American studies (Pass/NP) 4 quarter units (Not sure if it transfers over)
- AP US History (3) - fulfills American History requirement; 8 quarter units
- AP Statistics (-) - Granted I get a 4 or a 5, I skip Statistics 13; 4 quarter units
- AP Biology (-) I believe I will get 4 units, but do not skip a course.
- AP Calculus AB (5) - I will retake the courses. (what do you guuys think?

------------ I Plan on taking English 1A this summer before I start college and then two more quarters of English during other summers at a community college, I hope. --------------

Tentative schedule (Freshman):
- (Three quarters, 1 year) Calculus 16 series (Retaking AB, so I will start from Calc 16A and go all the way until 16C which will last for three quarters).

- (three quarters, 1 year) Chemistry series ( I will take the entire series, 2A, 2B, 2C)
- First quarter; freshman seminar
- Recommendations for GE's?
((Is taking two pre req's good for my first year?)

How should I shape the next three years? (O CHem Physics Biology)

Work this out with your counselor. He/she knows your school's system much better than any us. You aren't the only person who is on a pre-professional track at your school; they'll have a nice schedule already set up for you.

Yes, but the advice given here will likely be more valuable. Most advisers don't really know a whole lot, but members on this site have been through this process before and know which classes taken together are a decent load and which are an overload.

If it helps guide anyone's advice, I will be attending a University of California campus.

I too will be attend a UC 🙂. Which one are you going to (UCI here)? What I would do is go ahead and call the adviser and listen to what he says. After getting his recommended schedule, come back here and post it. This way you understand what the school's requirements are for your degree, and you can tweak and change the schedule so that it suits your pre-professional requirements. Remember that because the UCs are so impacted, you might have to change the schedule.

I chose Davis over Irvine. 😛 So I will be attending UC Davis in the fall. Best of luck to you at Irvine.

I personally would do the year of biology your freshman year instead of one of your "GEs". And take O Chem and Physics your sophomore year.

About picking your GE's I wouldn't worry about it too much, pick one that you like and can do good in, or if your like me just pick one that fits in well with your schedule. Most of the "pre-health advisors" told me to take Psychology as a GE but I didn't because it didn't really interest me and I don't think I would do to well in there anyway.

To give you an idea my GE's came from:
2 Government Classes
1 Criminal Justice Class
1 Philosophy Class
1 History Class

I graduated from UCD in 2008. Most bio majors I know took Calc. and Chem. first yr. Second year was mostly o chem and physics. As for the 3 bio series, well some took all 3 during their second year, but others took only 1 or 2 and saved the last 2 for summer and early on in their junior year. I didn't take Plant Bio till Winter of my Junior year. The Chem 2A series is a big one- decent number of my pre med friends changed majors after that one.

For GE's well just try to make sure you get them done in the first 2 yrs. Final 2 yrs concentrate on taking upper division classes for your major and taking whatever fun classes you want. FST 10, NUT 10, FST 3 are all fun classes that should be taken in your final 2 yrs. Make sure to use ratemyprofessor.com and pickaprof.com. The first one gives student opinions of the classes- sure you can't always trust what the students write or their reviews, but it helps bring up any red flags with teachers. Pickaprof show the actual grades that teachers give out. Trust me when you are looking for an easy class to add next to your upper division classes this helps a lot.

Are you in AP Calculus BC now?

I agree with others when they say you should talk to counselor. They'll know more and have specifics about the classes at UCD. It also depends on how soon you want to take the MCAT. If you want to want to take the test during your junior year, you have to plan accordingly so that you complete your prerequisites (or at least a majority of them) in your first two years.

I'm not sure when to take it. Ideally (now i'm saying ideally... I just don't want to take like 3 hard courses and not do super well) I want to finish my Pre- Requisites by the end of sophomore year so that way I can study all summer for the MCAT.

I am actually in Statistics right now; took calculus AB last year.

I think I might just stick with the Calculus + Chem combo. So taking three quarters of calc is just enough to meet the 1 year req and no more right? I just don't want to end up taking more math classes than I need.
