I am planning a vacation in June, and would like to go around the middle of the month. Since residency starts on July 1st, and programs have orientation prior to this, I am thinking that if I am back to the country around the 20th of June, I should be fine.

I was wondering if anyone here is aware of programs that actually have more than one week of orientation. If so, I may have to reconsider vacation dates. Obviously, I know there is a wide variety of schedules, but I'm wondering if I'll be safe by assuming a June 20th return date should give me enough time.

Thanks a lot guys, and good luck to all.

The safest answer is to contact the programs. Each program from my understanding handles it differently. The complication is compounded if you work at more than 1 hospital. E.g. at one place I've worked, for every extra hospital you worked at, you had to do that hospital's orientation--so the resident might have to go to 2-maybe even 4 rounds of orientation all in the first month. As you probably know several residencies operate in more than hospital campus.

Orientation from what I understand is a requirement and you can't get out of it. I've seen big university hospital programs sometimes hold a 2nd orientation for those who missed the first one, but usually its because the person missed it due to an emergency.

If orientation is not done, I'm not sure how the program would look upon that because again, from what I understand its required. One might not be allowed in the hospital as an employee.

Another factor is several places of employment have rules that you can't take vacation time until you've worked a certain number of hours. I don't remember if this applies to residency, and if so, if its program specific or a nationwide policy. All the more reason to contact the specific programs.

Definitely check with the program; I've seen orientations that start the second week of June.

Thanks for your reply, guys.

I'll be sure to either call the programs or check their websites....didn't realize orientation can sometimes start so soon😱.

At all the places I've seen it starts from day 1. Reason why is before you're even allowed to enter the hospital floor, you have to have orientation. What good are residents who can't do scut work for the attendings?

(waiting for a tomato to be thrown at me).
