Hi,

I am a third-year student, and I'm trying to plan out the next several months of my schedule. I am trying to plan 3 electives in rad onc, as well as schedule in some time to study for step II. My question is when should I try to have my electives completed by? When do letters need to be turned in, and when should away electives be completed by to make them beneficial in your application? Thanks for any help in advance.

November (of the year you're applying) is the latest you should consider doing an away rotation. In that situation, you are doing it in large part for your application to THAT program as you will (or will not) have already been offered interviews at other places.

Ideally, you would complete aways by the end of october.

Along that same vein of thought, it would be a very awkward situation if you were to do an away rotation at a place that just rejected you (happened to me).

I would also add that sept. is probably the last month you can do an away and expect to get an lor that can be transmitted through eras. 90% of programs have eras deadlines of nov. 1 and some with oct. 15 for completed applications.
