Planning on delaying my USMLE exam and applying "out of match"

Hi there,

So I have just graduated from a foreign medical school. I am American. So I'm just taking about a month off after grad to relax a little. Then I'm starting this intense USMLE STEP 1 course. It starts middle of July and ends the first week of November. I want to get the best score possible. So ideally I'd be taking STEP 1 in November and STEP 2 perhaps a month after (December). Clearly I'll be missing deadlines. Just wondering, can I still apply for residency? I've heard a lot about something called applying out of match.

“Applying out of match” is just hoping some random spaces are open somewhere that you hopefully can find out about

Yeah that’s not a good idea to bank on that.

If that’s your timeline you’ll be looking at the match of 2021.
