So I need to take a mental health LOA for a year. Just finished M2 year and will be studying during my year "off". For those who did something similar, what else should I plan to do besides study for step and take care of my mental health? Or should the question be IS there anything else I should do?

Focus on your mental health and stop looking for other things to do. I get it you feel like your not being productive but honestly if you don't really put your energy in figuring stuff out with your mental health then everything else you do in this time would be a waste.

Posted this in pre-allo, but few replies. I was rejected post-interview at the only two schools I got IIs from. I won't be reapplying until 2018 and will work on improving my app. I graduated from undergrad in 2013 and did a post-bac until 2015. I can get a new post-bac committee letter no problem, but the support letters that they include will be 3-4 years old by 2018.

I'm mainly worried about the academic LORs because I have kept in touch with them ever since they wrote my letters, but they haven't been responsive. For example, I asked a professor if she could write me an LOR for this program I applied for, but she did not respond after numerous attempts to reach out. I would stop by their office hours, but they are normally very prompt in replying to emails so I don't want them to update my letters with anything negative.

I can garner new LORs from my EC/work, but would old academic letters hurt my app? Does a new committee letter date overshadow a few old support letters included? I haven't taken a class in 2 years, so should I take one and try to cultivate a letter from that?

I was actually on the waitlist for both, but still wasn't accepted, so I was expecting rejections and wanted to plan the next year. Thankfully, I ended up getting in late June and rejected from the other one. Using this account since my other one has school specific related posts that could possibly id me.

If you actually need a mental health year - then stop worrying about studying.

You clearly have bigger problems than school that you need to take care of. Get that taken care of and make that front and center.

If I took a year off for mental health, I would work a clock-in, clock-out job for a year while doing mental health stuff (gym/therapy/doc/anything necessary). If you spend a year studying, then you didn’t take a LOA, you just made a mistake for no reason. 3rd year is easier anyway.
