Can anyone give me a list of the plastic programs that are "straight" without having to do a gen surgery, 5year program. I am an FMG (St. George's University) who is interested in applying to a program like this.

Are my chances slim since I am an FMG (Born in the U.S. attending a carribean med school)??

How about getting into a plastics program after a 5 year general surgery residency and then a fellowship?

Thanks

Just call or email a program director and find out. You can also look at some of the program's websites and see their roster of current residents.

Bear in mind that this is one of the most competitive residencies in the match. I think you might wish to focus on matching at a good g-surg program and doing a fellowship from there.

take a look at the thread currently that is entitled "Plastic Surgery (Combined/Integrated)??" Also keep in mind that a fair amount of these places are 3+3.

It has a list of what I assume to be most all of the programs that you can match to right out of med school. I'm only a third year but from all I can determine you are going to have an extremely difficult time getting one of these spots. I understand it to be of the the toughest matches. I'm not trying to discourage you, just give you my humble opinion on the situation. I wish you the best of luck.

As an addendum: I understand that the match rate after GS residency i.e. fellowship in plastics is also extremely difficult. Therefore, things don't get any easier just by going the fellowship route. It may even become harder as more and more programs are moving towards the integrated/combined path. There are various backups to give you time to eventually get your foot in the door, but it really depends how many years you are willing to spend.

You never know unless you apply. Every year one or two people in your situation (FMG's) match despite the odds against it. I would definately look at good general surgery programs as well. Unfortunately the fellowship match is also extremely competative. There are 300 people in the match this year for 100 or less spots. I just got back from an interview at University of Chicago. The 4 other applicants there were extremely impressive, and by impressive I mean their rides were completely pimped. We're talking absolute top of the line luxury with hydraulics, custom rims, plasma screens, DVD in every seatback and a badass stereo system. Their rides were bouncing and jumping all over the place. I was WAY WAY WAY out of my league.

UTSW which is considered one of the best programs in the country has a 3+2 integrated program. 2 years ago, they accepted an FMG from Germany.

Before you get your hopes up, bear in mind the FMG did a year of research with the department and was extremely well-liked by the Chair. I'm sure he had stellar board scores to boot. The a good number of residents are from 'top' med schools (HMS) or are from UTSW.

You never know what your chances are unless you give it a shot. But unless you have stellar board scores and some kick-ass recommendations from big names in the field of plastics, and at the least done an away rotation with the program that your interested in, you're fighting an uphill battle.

Good luck.

I had heard they were going to a six year program now

Nope. They applied for an additional year but were denied. They are still 5 years...for now.

so is WashU from what I know. Madly competetive, however.
