Hi SDN!

Could you please chance me? I'll be taking a gap year so schools will have my senior year grades. I think my academics are OK but I'm concerned that my extracurriculars are not good enough.

[Redacted for privacy PM me for the details] 🙂

I have anxiety issues so I don't think I'm going to be a good interviewer.
Is this too many schools? Any advice on additional ECs I need, schools to add, or schools to remove would be greatly appreciated!

Your stats are good! You'll be fine. Good luck!!

Your stats are not OK. They are awesome. Don't worry. I am sure you will get in a lot of schools.

If you worry about your interview skills, learn how to pick up a girl. If you can carry a 30 minutes conversation with a girl, you are on your way... We, dentists, can pick up girls left and right...

Cut down that list to about 10-15. Take out the random ones like LECOM and places you don't want to live. You're going to get in pretty much anywhere you apply to unless you have terrible interview skills. It's going to be a huge waste of money with application + secondary + plane tickets + hotels if you get interviews or acceptances you don't plan on going to.

I suggest taking a speech class or doing a bunch of mock interviews if you have anxiety issues. That'll do you better then taking anything else.

do i smell a troll? jk, just practice interviewing when you can and try not to be awkward. I'm sure you'll get interviews at all places and get accepted into the schools of your choice. I also think many schools will give you some sort of scholarship because of your stats.

Amen, brotha!

Where did you go to school? Are you an international student?

You have fantastic stats and I'm sure you'll get in to multiple schools, but out of personal experience, if you're an international student I would lower expectations a bit, just to be safe. Not trying to discourage you; its just something I had to do. I thought my application would carry me much further than they actually did, and most people advise me it's because I'm an international applicant. Keep your head on straight, however, and I'm sure you'll be fine.

I think you need to diversify your EC's a little more. With all that hospital volunteering, they may think you want to actually be an MD. And with your biotech research, they may think you are more of an academic and might leave dentistry later to pursue a PhD. These things do not bode well for you...

You should also really consider a dental mission trip to a third world country... it is practically impossible to get in to dschool without one these days.

Lastly, try to get more experience to show your true passions. You need to find these things out for yourself and develop them. Maybe something artsy... like guitar, watercolors, rap lyricist, or maybe even sculpting.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm worried that with my stats, I'll be subject to the Tufts Syndrome: schools like BU, USC and Tufts with lower matriculant stats will auto-reject me for yield protection and my ECs won't be good enough for schools like Harvard, Penn, or Columbia. I worry too much. 🙁

To cleanup: I'm a New Englander so I'm not international. I know it's harder for you guys up north. Congratulations on your multiple acceptances in spite of it though. 🙂

To UltimateHombre: I can't find a non-profit dental clinic that is accepting volunteers. Would my shadowing compensate as intent of interest? I can't really tell if you're joking or not...

For the record... i was being super sarcastic. Your stats and EC's blow most peoples' out of the water. I don't think you are lacking anything. Maybe in your time off you could apply for a TA position or get a job with a research company. Good use of time and get paid.

Seriously though... you have nothing to worry about. A+ all around your app!!

In your spare time, try to join a group called Toastmasters.....they help people become more comfortable and better speakers. That's what I plan to do....I have anxiety although I'm able to hide it pretty well.
Good luck!

Whew, I was gonna say... your post was totally bogus. Good thing you clarified, haha.

If you application is ok, then with my stats, I'll never get into dental school 😳

You'll be one of first ones to get accepted next cycle. JEALOUS! 👍👍

you'll have no chance ... sorry... take a post bac to increase ur gpa then try again

You won't need that many schools on that list. Save your money.

I got a 23 AA; 25 TS; 22 PAT and I applied to 8 schools. Got interviews from 4, got into all of them.

You have a 25 TS though which is far superior to my 22TS. 😳 You're also a NY resident. Could you please PM me your ECs as a reference for me?

your 22 TS is not too far off from my 25 TS. But, I got a 17 in RC so..... 😛

Ignoring my academic stats, are my ECs competitive by themselves? They seem hopelessly inadequate in comparison to other applicants on predents and SDN.
