Hello All,

I am a non-trad who is reapplying for this upcoming cycle, and I have come up with my school list. I didn't get a single interview during the last cycle, so I am pretty nervous/desparate/hopeless. Please provide me with good feedback.

Demographics:
24 years old, East Asian, California resident.

Numbers:
cGPA: 3.94, sGPA: 3.97
MCAT: 1st time, 9 ps, 9 vr, 12 bs (30Q)
2nd time, 13 ps, 10 vr, 14 bs (37R)

EC
I will bold the changes that I've made since the last cycle.

Clinical Volunteering
1) 120 hours hospital ER volunteering by June
2) 200 hours externship at a local clinic.

Pure Shadowing
1) 20 hours with a bariatric surgeon during both OR and clinic days.
1) 20 hours with a pediatrician.

Research
1) Undergraduate Researcher for 2.5 years: no pub, but received ~2K grant and presented at the school's annual symposium.

Non-clinical volunteering/activities
1) Bible school teacher for 4 years. Free tutoring on saturdays and Christian stuff on sundays
2) Various summer missions with my mission organization.
3) 1 year mission to china to counsel studnets mainly and teach english on the side.

Employment
1) Private tutor

Others:
several academic awards.

LOR <--------currently my biggest concern
1) my PI and science professor at the same time <----this should be pretty strong but can this qualify for science letter requirement?
I can't find one more science professor if that letter doesnt qualify unless i take another class.....

2) I am also adding two new letters from a physician and a supervisor for my mission work in China since those were my most meaningful activities.

Some of the schools at which you might have had a good chance at an interview ( e.g.Loma Linda) can only interview a small number of their applicants with such a high MCAT score due to yield.

The rest of your list is way too top heavy. You need the middle ground.

Make your PS a compelling read and identify a significant number of OOS schools that might interview you.

Thank you for your input! 🙂 which school is a good example of the middleground schools? BU?

Stats wise, yes. Sadly, with >10,000 aps its utility for CA applicants is limited. Do you have the MSAR? Look for private OOS schools with median a MCAT of 32-34. Also look at religiously affiliated schools (SLU, Creighton, Loyola...).

Did you apply the previous cycle with no shadowing experience?

ohhhh,,,,, haha. thank you so much. is there any way i can improve my app furtuher? am i good to go for this cycle?

With your added clinical and shadowing hours your app looks a lot more competitive this cycle.

Your current list is a little top heavy. Some schools average MCAT retakes, so it might be safer to make your list based off a 33.5 MCAT. Make sure you're ok with Loma Linda's lifestyle agreement, and UW would be hard as an OOS person.

Consider adding the following schools: Creighton, SLU, Georgetown, Loyola, VCU, Jefferson, Medical College of Wisconsin, Downstate, Buffalo, Ohio State, Emory, Baylor, Case, UVA.

Wow, thank you! That list of schools is really helpful. And.. Loma Linda.. haha If i get in, I 'll just quit drinking for four years. ^^

It's caffeine too.

If you can't get acceptances to at least 15 of those schools, then something is seriously wrong! I'd say you're a shoo-in. I'm just guessing that your previous ill-luck was from your MCAT.

I just have one question! Are my clinical hours sufficient to apply this year??

The raw hours look fine. It's more about how meaningful they were, if you learned from them, and if you can write/speak about them in your essays and interviews.
