So far I've been accepted into Temple in Philly but can possibly get off the waitlist at either Emory and Georgetown so it may have to come to this decision. I need some feedback from SDNers about these schools. I am currently living and working in Atlanta for the past year and a half so I know the city and have a good network of friends here. But I have family about an hour outside of Philly and grew up in that area. DC is a good option because my sister lives there. Her and I are really close. I don't know which to choose, if I had to make the choice, because all are great schools and all are around the same price. Temple is public but I'm out of state. Help!

Emory is the best of the three by far

What are your reasons for saying that?

Temple is not public. It recieves public $$ since the population it serves tends to be lower income.

I have been to temple & georgetown, and I liked both while I was there. They are very different though--Georgetown is in an affluent area, with a hospital that is not owned by the school.
Temple is in a run down area, but there is more opportunity to see diversity in people and cases there. The thing is that most students live further away from campus, and don't tend to stick around campus much after the sun sets. But the students seemed really cool and happy.

I have never been to Emory so I cannot comment, but of the 3 it does have the best academic reputation. You have to decide how important that is to you.

I say that because Emory is the best of the three academically. I was really turned off by georgetown when I was there -- buildings were grundgy and the students seemed to not like the school. Emory was warm and sunny, and the area is really pretty. They seemed to be throwing the money around for the students. I don't know anything about temple though

TEMPLE for sure!!

I was at both Emory and Georgetown, accepted to G'T. The worst thing about Georgetown was the buildings- no technology infrastructure. But I liked the curriculum and the University Center right there. The biggest turnoff at Emory was Grady...alot of people loved it but I think spending an hour on the "grady bus" every day for 2 years would get very old. If emory solely used their hospital and clinic right there for clerkships it would be perfect!!

My vote goes to Emory.

I would have to tell you Emory...I just graduated from Emory undergrad, and you absolutely cannot beat the atmosphere. The campus is gorgeous and warm and sunny, the buildings are beautiful and the gym is huge. You can get luxurious housing in nearby apartment complexes for really cheap. I almost cannot believe that I decided to move back to the northeast because I am going to miss it down there. But besides all that--while it sucks that Grady is downtown, you do have access to some amazing facilities right on campus (you ownt spend all your time at Grady)--the CDC is five feet away, Children's healthcare is across the street (which is used for teaching), the American Cancer Society and American heart association are also right across the street. Above all that, Emory has a ton of money just waiting to be thrown around, and it is there for students to tap into.

oldcane:

You would probably get the best clinical training at Emory, and academically it is more respected than the other two schools. But I have never heard of a happy student at Emory. (I've only known or met a handful of Emory med students, known the siblings or friends of a few more, so obviously my sample size is small.)

Georgetown is not worth your time. That school is living off of the fumes of its undergraduate and other graduate programs. You will be sitting on your hands, as the patient volume is not high enough even for the residents to get a good education.

I would say it's a choice between Temple and Emory.

Cheers

It seems like responses are mixed. I agree with everyone so far. I like Emory because I know the area and it is beautiful. I wouldn't have to move (BIG PLUS). Emory has Grady...I know I would get a great clinical experience there and would be exposed to a diverse population. The commute to Grady wouldn't be a big deal to me either. The negatives about Emory are students are rumored to be competitive and also a little arrogant (but I also heard the same about Georgetown). Pretty traditional curriculum, not that much of a big deal, but the idea of group testing is a little scary. I know of the 3 it's the only one that's ranked but how much does that really matter in the whole scheme of things. Will it really help that much to get a good residency? 😕
