Please compare these schools: CMS, UVM, UF, BU, GW, & Temple

I guess I'll join the bandwagon and make one of these polls so I'll be prepared just in case the waitlist gods show me some love.

I am accepted at Finch/Chicago Med and have waitlists at:
U Vermont
U Florida
George Washington
Temple
Boston University

How would you rank these schools? I'd appreciate any comments, and of course, your vote! 😀

I've only been to 1 of these schools 🙂 , but judging from what my friends have said (they cover the rest)

1. UF
underrated, nice weather, locale, cheap instate
2. BU
very very very expensive but more highly rated than the rest
3. Temple
great clinical training, in bad part of town tho
4. GWU
new hospital opening, very expensive, bad financial aid packages, great access to gov't stuff, unfortunately, has an inferiority complex
5. UVT
i've heard nothing but good things about vermont, but it's geared a lot towards rural from what i hear so.... not my thing
6. CMS

I hope you get in fla. foxy! isn't that your #1 choice?

I don't know anything about UVM, GWU or UFla, but I'll rank the rest.

Temple>BU>>>>Finch

BU is ranked high and, from what I hear about its primary teaching hospital Boston Medical Center, the clinical training should be pretty strong. Boston Medical Center is one of the more reputable hospitals in the Northeast and they serve a large low-income population. I'd probably say that BU has the best reputation out of the six schools that you listed. However, I've heard that there's a somewhat stressful, competitive environment there.
[Also, this is strictly a personal thing, but I just can't get over how utterly unfriendly and unpleasant their admissions people were. I wonder if that sort of attitude pervades the administration.]

Temple may not be ranked high, but the students just seemed very happy and well-grounded in their ideals. The clinical education there is supposed to be awesome. And I just loved the vibrancy and the urban feel of their little inner-city health science complex.

I don't know anything about UF, but I don't think any of the other 5 schools are worth passing up a state school for. So, I would go to UF.

Dr. Foxy...I'd say go to BU over anything. I know your boyfriend is in B Town. Plus it is a pretty happening city, as I'm sure you know. Chicago Med is also a great school. So if I were you, after BU, i'd look to see which school I'd fit in the best. Which atmosphere do you like the best? You gotta think you are going to spending 4 years of your life there. So there has to be something there for you to like at the school which you choose. Good Luck deciding!

I would take Florida, it is cheaper for one thing. That is your state of residence, and the other thing the weather is awesome. Time off take a drive to the keys, or kill a free day at the beach, how can it get any better.

Doctora, that is by far the most clever survey on the SDN! There is a whole research field devoted to the interpretation of such surveys called "conditional analyses" if you are interested. Anyways, here is my 2 cents. The most important factors to me in a school are location and reputation. For reputation, it is close between GW and BU by far. For location, you have DC, Boston, and Florida. If I had the decision it would be GW or BU. I am waitlisted at GW, got no love from BU. Good luck with the waitlists and final decision!

I know the USNews rankings don't mean much, but as far as NIH money, BU and UF are ranked 39 and 44 repectively, so I would say UF is the best choice since it's much cheaper and warmer (and happier) and has a great rep. UF is definitely my first choice, but I was just wondering what other people think.

I would really love to go to BU, GW or Temple as well.

No, GW does NOT have such a fantastic reputation. It's a good school, don't get me wrong--my father went there and I very nearly went there (I decided to avoid the debt and attended my state school, which is actually slightly better, but only slightly.) The main issue with GW is that it is SO expensive, and has such poor financial aid packages, that a large percentage of the students who go there attend because they weren't accepted anywhere else. You will receive a fine medical education at any of the schools you listed. My personal ranking of those schools:

1. BU
2. Temple
3. UF
4. GW
5. Vermont
6. Finch

Since UF is your state school, I highly recommend going there if you get in.

pocwana: yes I'm still waitlisted at all of them, and I'd go to all of them over CMS except maybe Vermont....but I'm at the bottom of that list so I'm keeping my options open :wink:

My newest imaginary dilemma is going to set up my apt at Finch and buying furniture, having my car shipped, etc, only to find out I got accepted elsewhere during my trip....

Let me vent some more: My parents are coming with me to help me out when I get to med school, so in a week I'll have to buy plane tickets, which is expensive from FL to IL times 3....what if I get in somewhere else in 2 weeks from now? I hate wasting money after wasting so much just to apply to med school! <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" />

Hey Foxy I totally feel your pain. My worry is that just when I get to school or just as Im about to drive back out and get all settled with a roomate and stuff Im gonna hear from one of my waitlists that Im in and I'll have to forfeit the lease, find a way to sell of fast the furniture I dont want, and somehow forfeit my lease without my roomate wanting to kill me, and then move all my stuff out 😡 . It's gonna be a major pain, but I thikn in the end it's worth it if Im gonna be goign somewhere I might be better off or happier at for the next 4 yrs. I mean the cost and money will be a major pain to deal with but in the long run when you start working with your MD, you'll more than make it up. That's the only real way to look at it without getting into an angry frenzy...haha. I just wish the schools in general would show more consideration to the applicants in this process than they do. One of my waitlists they wont even tell you your rank on the list which is pretty jacked. Oh well...I guess that's what we have to go thru. It's better to be somewhre at least than no where.

just a small consideration, being a philly native, I must warn you temple is in one the least sexy neighborhoods in any city of america (as in, the dorms have all kinds of big brother surveillance), so unless you want to live in a really bad area you'll be making some sort of commute, and dont get caught waiting for the broad street line subway past 10pm. Of course, if you're looking for places to stay in philly i know the town inside out, but if you're looking for a school in a "scenic" area, temple is not the place

I know you're not too into Vermont, but I'd like to give it a plug. Burlington is a rapidly growing city. Many companies from Boston are moving their headquarters there b/c cost of living is much lower. So there's lots of young people, it's near great skiing and hiking and it's an overall beautiful city. So don't count it out completely cause people are really happy there. Good luck!
